Electricity prices have been high in Germany for years.

In 2024 they will increase again for many providers.

The price increases are scheduled to come into force in April.

Frankfurt – Electricity prices in Germany have been consistently high for a long time.

To be more precise, they have roughly doubled in the past 15 years, as the comparison portal Verivox reports.

This year too, consumers will be asked to pay more for electricity than before.

More precisely, from April 1st, because then two of the largest German energy companies, EnBW from Karlsruhe and EWE from Oldenburg, will increase their electricity prices.

As a result of an electricity price increase of 15.9 percent from April this year, EnBW customers will pay significantly more for their electricity bills than before.

“For a model household with an annual consumption of 2,900 kilowatt hours (kWh), this means additional costs of around 16 euros per month,” said a press release from the group, which

SWR

reported on yesterday.

And the Oldenburg provider EWE will also significantly increase its electricity prices on April 1st, as

NDR

reported today.

The group cites increased network fees and the surcharge for electricity-intensive businesses as reasons for this.

The company said the price increase would affect around 210,000 electricity consumers.

Calculated over the year, this means 62 euros more for households with a sample consumption of 2,800 kilowatt hours.

82 other energy suppliers are increasing their electricity prices - others are remaining stable

In addition to the two large energy companies EnBW and EWE, there are also other regional energy suppliers that will increase their electricity prices in 2024.

For March, 82 electricity price increases nationwide have already been announced by regional suppliers, as the

Bild

newspaper reported today, citing the comparison portal Verivox

reported.

On average, the increases in electricity prices amount to around 6 percent.

For a three-person household with an annual consumption of, for example, 4000 kWh, this corresponds to an additional burden of around 94 euros per year.

However, there are also enough energy suppliers who keep their prices at a constant level despite the thankless market situation.

This includes the energy company Enercity from Hanover.

According to

NDR

, the energy company recently announced that it did not want to pass on increased network fees to its customers.

Likewise, the nationwide provider E.ON Energie Deutschland does not want to increase the price of electricity.

At least for now - according to NDR,

the energy supplier is

not ruling out a price increase at a later date.

In addition to the nationwide electricity price increases, 13 energy companies have announced electricity price reductions of around 10 percent.

This corresponds to around 221 euros.

These include, among others, the Dortmund energy supplier DEW21, which wants to lower its prices for basic services on March 1st, and the Frankfurt am Main-based Eon subsidiary Süwag.

She plans to reduce the price on May 1st this year.

The traffic light coalition had to revise plans for subsidies - this caused network fees to rise

The traffic light coalition had originally planned to subsidize network fees with a total of 5.5 billion euros.

But because of the deficit in the federal budget, the federal government decided in December to cancel the planned subsidies without replacement.

As a result, the major network operators more than doubled their network fees - from 3.1 to 6.4 cents per kilowatt hour.

In some federal states, electricity prices have recently risen by around a third, as the comparison portal Check24 reported in January.

As a result, electricity prices in Thuringia rose by 33 percent.

In Bavaria, costs must be expected to be 32 percent higher.

And in North Rhine-Westphalia there are also 31 percent additional costs.

The state of Brandenburg, for example, is doing better, where network usage fees are only two percent more expensive.

The situation is similar in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania - there network fees are rising by 4 percent.

Experts advise consumers to be active in choosing their electricity provider

“Consumers will have to pay significantly more for electricity this year than last year.

The political decisions have a direct impact on the wallets of energy customers,” says Steffen Suttner, Managing Director of Energy at Check24.

If you want to minimize price increases, the expert advises you to take action yourself and change provider if necessary.

“This is the only way consumers can cushion the enormous additional costs.”

Taxes, levies and levies currently make up a total of around 29.5 percent of the final electricity price.

In addition to the electricity tax and concession fees to the municipalities, this also includes taxes made up of the Combined Heat and Power Act (KWKG), the Section 19 NEV levy, the offshore network levy and VAT.
