Temu commented on points of criticism to Ippen.Media.
Meanwhile, calls for a tougher approach against low-cost marketplaces are becoming louder.
Berlin – Criticism of low-cost provider Temu has increased in recent weeks.
Consumer advocates and experts called for caution - customers also reported negative experiences when shopping with Temu on review portals.
The provider has now spoken out to
Ippen.Media
.
Low-cost provider Temu rejects criticism about the lack of quality control
One criticism of Temu is the poor quality of the goods.
The goods are delivered directly from the manufacturer (from China).
Temu initially stated
to
Ippen.Media that third-party sellers offer their goods and that Temu does not produce the products itself.
“As soon as products are suspected of being counterfeit or even dangerous, Temu initiates an immediate review of the products and, if in doubt, removes them from the platform,” said a Temu employee.
Temu also actively works with its sellers to confirm that the goods meet all the required criteria.

Criticism of low-cost provider Temu – data collection is a clear goal according to the employee
Another point of criticism towards Temu concerns the lack of data economy: The Temu app requires numerous access permissions on the smartphone or tablet, for example to the camera, the microphone or the address book in the smartphone.
However, this access is not required for the ordering process.
“Temu values privacy and is transparent about its data practices,” the employee said.
The company collects information to provide and continuously improve products and services to users.
The data collected by Temu corresponds to common industry practice.
Resistance to Temu is growing – calls for a European solution are becoming louder
But despite clarification, resistance against the provider is growing.
Trade experts and associations are calling for stricter action against Chinese low-cost marketplaces such as Temu, which is on the rise.
“Neither the European nor the German legislature are in a position to fully enforce their regulations and laws against Chinese companies,” said the deputy general manager of the German Trade Association (HDE), Stephan Tromp, to the
German Press Agency (dpa).
This would create distortions of competition.

The flood of parcels from China is a Europe-wide problem for which there must be a European solution.
For example, many packages arrive at the logistics center at Brussels Airport.
“And once the products are in Europe, they have more or less free rein.
We have to protect our internal market,” said Tromp. “If a market is flooded with unsafe products, danger is imminent.”
Criticism of Temu: Trade association calls for improved customs duties and more market surveillance
Trading platforms like Temu do not have to be banned.
“If everyone has to follow the same rules, competition takes place for the benefit of the consumer.
Then the better solution wins,” said Tromp. But if such platforms can make things easier for themselves because politicians and authorities don’t control them as much, that would be unfair.
The HDE is therefore calling for customs, which is responsible for parcel handling, to be strengthened.
“Customs are simply overwhelmed by the sheer volume,” said Tromp, who is also an expert in digitalization at the HDE.
One starting point could be a digital platform on which every shipment must be registered.
Packages from retailers who did not adhere to the rules could be sorted out more easily and quickly.
In addition, market surveillance must be carried out on a large scale.
