The end is in sight: the city of Miesbach has to survive a few more months before the quarantine period for the Asian long-horned beetle (ALB) is over.

Miesbach - All restrictions in accordance with the general decree issued to combat the dreaded pest apply until December 31, 2024 - provided that no new traces of infestation - beetles, larvae or boreholes - are discovered by then.

After the felling measures to combat ALB in Miesbach were completed in 2020, the focus continues to be on systematic monitoring and compliance with all quarantine regulations in the quarantine zone.

The woody plants that are considered for the ALB and its development are expected to be examined for possible infestation by the end of the year.

Until then, all associated restrictions on the use of wood will remain in place.

These will only cease to apply when the general order is repealed.

The search for the pest continues.

The search forces from the Office for Food, Agriculture and Forestry (AELF) in Holzkirchen, under the direction of forestry engineer Martin Fäth, check the trees in the forest areas of the quarantine zone all year round - using optical monitoring using binoculars and also with the help of pheromone traps, tree climbers and sniffer dog handlers.

Some suspected cases from last year that were found were subsequently subjected to more detailed investigation.

The positive result for Miesbach: No new ALB information could be confirmed.

Monitoring has limits

Since monitoring alone does not provide complete security, all requirements of the general decree continue to apply without restriction until the end of the quarantine zone period.

The AELF is asking citizens for help in this context.

You should report any suspected cases - in town to the State Office for Agriculture (LfL) in Freising, in forest areas to the AELF.

In addition, the regulations for firewood must still be observed and planned logging operations involving hardwood must be applied to the AELF two weeks in advance.

Risk of confusion with native beetles

Thanks to the cooperation so far and compliance with the strict quarantine guidelines, the quarantine zone can probably be dissolved after the minimum term at the end of this year, reports the AELF.

If you store firewood in a warm room during the cold season, you could come across beetles that hatch due to the warmth.

However, these are usually native species.

However, if a beetle looks similar to the ALB, it should be caught alive if possible and stored in a cool place in a sealable jar with air holes in the lid.

Martin Fäth from AELF Holzkirchen accepts tips.

You can also send him clear, clear photos by email.

It is important that the entire beetle and the pattern on the wing coverts can be seen in the pictures.

This is intended to avoid confusion with native longhorn beetles such as the strictly protected Alpine longhorn beetle.
