Workers at Stellantis' historic Mirafiori plant in Turin walked off the job for the second dayrunning Thursday amid uncertainty about their jobs following the carmaker's announcement of a month's lay-offs in March.
The workers on the first shift of the 500 electric car line left the factory in a procession.
This followed a wildcat strike Wednesday after manufacturingunion FIOM briefed the workers on the Italian-French-Americancarmaker's stance over the layoffs.
"The workers are worried, they want to send a clear signal to the institutions, Mirafiori cannot close," said the secretarygeneral of the Turin FIOM, Edi Lazzi, and the number one of thePiedmont CGIL, Italy's biggest and most leftwing unionfederation, Giorgio Airaudo.
Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares said last week he cannot ensure the future of its Italian plants unless the carmaker gets major incentives to make electric cars.
But Chairman John Elkann reiterated his commitment to the Italian plants in meetings Tuesday with Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, President Sergio Mattarella, and Bank of Italy Governor Fabio Panetta, among others.
