Mini and midi jobs are a popular source of additional income in Germany - even among pensioners.

There are a number of advantages that retirees can enjoy.

Munich – Millions of retirees have to make do with a meager pension – many have no choice but to continue earning money.

Others, on the other hand, want to feel the exchange with others and meaningfulness in their everyday lives through their work, even after they have left their professional life behind them.

A mini-job comes in handy.

Many mini-jobbers are retired

A mini or midi job in a private household has many advantages, especially for pensioners, explains Lena-Marei Ardelt, Head of Business Development at quitt Germany, to

Ippen.Media

.

quitt is a Swiss start-up that expanded to Germany in 2022 and offers its service there for the legally secure registration of private employment relationships.

And it's not uncommon for seniors to be there.

According to the mini-job center, 20 percent of mini-jobbers in private households are retirees, said Ardelt.

“This is very popular with pensioners and private employers.” Be it childcare as a so-called surrogate grandma or surrogate grandpa, or for other work.

But what should you take into account?

Mini job: Top up your pension without having to pay social contributions

The most important thing about a mini-job: monthly earnings must not exceed the limit of 538 euros per month in 2024.

The annual maximum earnings this year are 6,456 euros.

In addition, a maximum work commitment of 70 days per calendar year applies.

Social security contributions do not have to be paid for a mini-job.

Anyone who earns more than the mini-job limit must expect income tax deductions and pay social security contributions.

Therefore, pensioners often decide to work a mini-job, which allows them to supplement their pension relatively easily.

Midi jobs: More net than gross for pensioners

But there are also advantages for pensioners in so-called midi jobs in private households, emphasizes Ardelt.

With midi jobs you are in a transitional area with earnings of between 538.01 euros and 2,000 euros per month.

In contrast to mini-jobs, midi-jobs are subject to full social insurance contributions: both the employer and the midi-jobber pay into pension insurance, health and nursing care insurance and unemployment insurance.

In addition, midi jobs are reported to the employees' health insurance company.

However, pensioners, unlike other employees, have more net than gross in a midi job, explains Ardelt.

Because their social contributions are lower.

For example, they do not have to pay into unemployment insurance.

“With an average midi-job salary as a domestic helper or nanny of 800 euros gross, pensioners receive almost 40 euros more net per month than other employees,” says Ardelt.

However, pensioners, unlike other employees, have more net than gross in a midi job, explains Lena-Marei Ardelt from quitt Germany.

Paying pension contributions can also be worthwhile for pensioners

For both midi and mini-jobs, the expert also recommends that pensioners contact the German pension insurance company to find out whether it is worth continuing to pay pension contributions voluntarily.

Anyone who decides to do so pays into the pension fund and thereby increases their pension.

This new pension entitlement will then be credited on July 1st.

In the commercial sector, your own contribution is 3.6 percent, in private households it is 13.6 percent, explains the mini-job center.

With a monthly income of 538 euros, the personal contribution would be 19.37 euros per month.

However, the monthly pension increases by 5.35 euros for every year in a mini-job.

However, the deposit is only possible if you have not consciously decided against it in the past.

If this is not the case, you can inform your employer informally in writing that you would like to opt-in to the pension insurance.
