The son-in-law of late Mafia boss of bosses Salvatore Totò Riina, Antonio Ciavarello, was arrested on Malta Thursday on a European warrant issued by a Brindisi court in January 2022 to serve a definitive sentence for mafia offences.
Ciavarello was taken into custody by Maltese police at dawn after weeks of investigations.
He appeared in court later Thursday and agreed to be returned to Italy, local media reported.
Riina died in 2017 aged 87 after his arrest of him in January 1993 following a bloody bombing campaign that claimed the lives of anti-mafia magistrates Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino the previous year and which continued in 1993 killing 10 more people at art sites in Rome, Florence and Milan .
