Senegal has been experiencing tensions since the decree taken on Saturday by President Macky Sall, postponing the presidential election scheduled for February 25.
The text was confirmed by a law passed Monday in the National Assembly postponing the poll to December 2024 and maintaining the president in his post until then.
The Minister of Justice, Aïssata Tall Sall, (no family connection with the president) explains.

- Why did the National Assembly vote to postpone the presidential election?

We have never asked the Assembly to postpone this election.
This is not an initiative of the executive, even less of President Macky Sall.
The postponement came from an opposition group which considered that its candidate, Karim Wade, would have been ousted in an unusual manner by the Constitutional Council.
We do not comment on Council decisions because we respect the separation of powers.
But we also cannot interfere with the demands that MPs…
