Two bridges in the Au market area urgently need to be replaced.

The planning is still in its early stages, but it is already clear: it will be expensive.

Au/Hallertau

– “The costs of bridge construction have exploded extremely.” Alexander Söllner from the Dippold and Gerold engineering firm made no secret of this at the Au market council meeting on Tuesday.

The councils could already prepare to dig deep into their pockets for the two measures.

Directly in Au it's about the bridge on the Klosterberg between the castle and the planned community park.

It needs to be rebuilt; they want to restore some of the bridge railing on the castle side to a historical one and expose the view of the castle again.

“This is also interesting from an urban planning perspective,” said Mayor Hans Sailer.

It is not yet clear where the temporary bridge will be built

While the bridge is being rebuilt, a temporary bridge over the Leitersdorfer Bach is needed: “For pedestrians, for construction workers and to temporarily relocate sectors such as gas and electricity,” explained Söllner.

The replacement building could either be built directly next to the actual construction site or alternatively 100 meters further upstream, where the community park is to be built.

The planner made it clear that the first option was the more sensible one in order to keep the distances short.

However, this requires approval from the church and another owner, on whose property the temporary bridge would stand for a construction period of around four months.

“That still needs to be clarified,” said town hall boss Sailer.

“But we still have a little time for that now.”

The plan is to move forward with planning as quickly as possible so that the measure can be put out to tender in the autumn.

“If the weather permits, we could get started in March 2025 so that we can be finished in July or August,” said Söllner, explaining the ideal process.

The first cost estimate amounts to around 537,000 euros for the new construction of the bridge itself and around 37,000 for the interim bridge - sums that the council had to swallow.

According to Mayor Hans Sailer, the bridge over the Abens near Seysdorf is “extremely dilapidated”.

And, as Söllner had announced, the numbers for project number two didn't get any better either.

The bridge over the Abens near the Seysdorf district also needs to be replaced; in Sailer's words, it is "in a state of disrepair and has already partially broken down".

The construction work is scheduled to start this year, and the town hall boss wants to issue the planning order at the next meeting.

Planner Söllner estimated the costs for the entire measure - the construction of the new bridge including the necessary elevation of the path and the associated work - at around 346,000 euros.

AELF takes over funding

The good news: According to Sailer, the Office for Food, Agriculture and Forestry (AELF) has promised, although so far only verbally, to support the construction project by up to 90 percent.

In addition to several forest owners, the AELF in particular needs the crossing over the Abens to get into the forest.
