The left that eliminated from the map the stains of iniquity that discriminated against those who lost step in the race of life, seem to have entered into crisis, exhausted, if not fascinated, by the irruption of old oppressive nostalgia. Democracy, we believed with a certain pride, was the victory of the new against the authoritarian backwardness of the past. It was the generational change from the uncultured to an almost new humanity. Now there is euphoria for the extreme right

A non-professional bricklayer who did his job very well when he had one more drink approached me and told me that the best thing about man was his heart.

“We take it to the left,” he said.

The popular adage speaks, however, of getting up on the wrong foot when something goes wrong.

Ah, but God in the Bible says that in the afterlife the good will be to the right of him and the bad to the left of him.

They were?

Today it is enough to take a look at the comments in the international press to understand that something is not working in the panorama of so-called progressive or left-wing policies while we are shocked by the invasion of an extreme right that is gaining weight around the world.

Aristotelian logic is still current: in the face of facts there is no room for illumination.

And the facts, in politics, are today before everyone's eyes.

Or is it not true that the values attributed to the left, to progressivism, to modernism, to movements on the subject of new identities, are beginning to be in crisis while what we believed to be rancid residues of generational backwardness gallop?

Democracy, we believed with a certain pride, was the victory of the new against the authoritarian backwardness of the past.

It was the generational change from the uncultured to an almost new humanity.

And it could and should be because the metaphysics of improvement resides in the human being.

And the left, with its new symbols of freedom, of opening doors by breaking locks that oppressed intelligence, presented itself as the flag of the new civilization freed from the chains of past obscurantism.

What is happening then to that liberation movement that seems to have lost oxygen by allowing itself to be overtaken by the clumsy trots of a right that until yesterday seemed crude to us and today threatens to win the race at the polls to regain the helm of the world?

It is useless to shed tears and cast anathemas on the gallop of the extreme right in the world.

It is necessary to reflect more than to regret the reason for this new right-wing or obscurantist, or Nazi, or whatever you want to call it epidemic.

Why did the left, not the Stalinist one, but the one with the flags of freedom, the one that gave us a vision of the world in the light of the sun, with doors and windows open to creativity and without the taboos of a suffocating religiosity, is starting to be in crisis?

Political analysts today are racking their brains to try to explain the new fascination that in millions of people, even in countries seen as impervious to the demons of obscurantism, is creating the rancid culture of a past that we thought was buried.

Could it be that we, too, have grown tired of living without chains and return to longing for the old biblical pots of Egyptian slavery, despising the manna symbol of liberation?

It was the liberating left, social democracy, that of sunny mornings for everyone and not just for the privileged of the court, which had awakened dreams that seemed impossible.

The left that eliminated from the map the stains of iniquity that discriminated against those who lost step in the race of life, seem to have entered into crisis, exhausted, if not fascinated, by the irruption of old oppressive nostalgia.

It is not enough to complain, to be surprised, to anathematize these new rights of ultraliberalism.

It is necessary to present to the voters alternatives of enthusiasm, free of labels, understandable for everyone, capable of, if not eliminating, at least reducing the wounds of those millions of people who cannot live with a minimum of human dignity.

Either the left is able to regain the trust of the masses and enthuse them, or the world will find itself trapped faster than we imagine in dark experiences that evoke, if not overcome, the old demons that have already poisoned and even bloodied to the peoples under the hackneyed flags of “God, Country and Freedom.”

The experience of centuries reminds us that if people's trust in democratic values is lost, recovering it can be a battle of the titans.

The moment that the world is going through in its political crisis, where the forgotten bloody conflicts of the past are not perhaps re-emerging, is showing us this.

Destroying and corrupting, wanting to stay in power at any cost and using that power for dark personal interests, is always easier and faster than creating new paradigms of trust and hope that it is still possible to live under skies where politics is not a word. damned.

And where the values of democracy, without adjectives, without labels, are a reality that creates well-being and hopes for all.

Together and excited.

Utopia?

Clear.

But is it possible to live without utopias without the existential anguish growing that is already beginning to afflict millions of people like an epidemic that affects not only their physical appearance but also beyond?
