Skiing in the popular German ski area will soon no longer be possible - despite a major investment.

There are other plans for that.

Munich - The Jenner am Königssee will close its ski slopes forever, an era is coming to an end, ski operations will be completely stopped - despite major financial investments.

The headlines about the ski area in Bavaria have recently been something like this.

But the situation is not quite as dramatic as it initially sounded.

Because the Jennerbahn is a year-round railway.

For years, around 70 percent of winter guests have been pedestrians and not alpine skiers, as the press spokeswoman told our editorial team when asked.

Ski operations at Jenner soon become history: “Demand continues to decline”

In the past, snow-covered slopes and alpine skiing from the mountain to the valley were offered in winter.

“Demand continues to decline,” said the Jennerbahn press spokeswoman to

Merkur.de.

That's why the decision was made this winter to realign with a limited offer for alpine riders.

The upper area of the mountain between the middle station and the mountain station was no longer snow-covered or groomed.

“That doesn't sound logical, but the terrain in this area is difficult and we need a very high snow layer in order to prepare attractive slopes.

These slopes are too steep and too difficult for the guests in Berchtesgaden; for skiing today, wide and flat slopes are required,” says the statement.

A ski route for ski tourers has therefore been marked in this area.

In any case, they are far more numerous than alpine skiers.

This winter, a shorter, blue piste was prepared for skiers between the valley and middle stations.

“No one can or wants to pay for that”: Ski operations on the Jenner in Bavaria will be discontinued

“In order to cover our costs, we would have to charge very high prices for ski tickets.

Nobody can or wants to pay that,” said the spokeswoman.

This has consequences: Alpine skiing will no longer be offered from next winter.

Falling demand (only 700 Alpine ski day tickets were sold between Christmas and January 24th) and the high costs of snowmaking and preparation play the decisive role.

Climate change is also not innocent in the situation.

In recent years there have often been warm spells at Christmas.

“The mostly finished slopes cannot withstand the high temperatures at altitudes as low as ours (600 to a maximum of 1,800 meters),” explains the spokeswoman.

If sufficient skiing is not possible during the Christmas holidays, it will no longer be possible to make up for it in January and February - this means skiing is not profitable.

Ski operations end despite mega investment: “It’s not all over”

Media reports stated that a lot of money had recently been invested, with talk of over 50 million euros.

The end of alpine skiing caused a stir.

Was everything in vain?

No, says the speaker.

Because: “It’s not all over.

We need the chairlift at Jennerwiese to transport guests and sleighs for the toboggan run, which has been very well received.

The Krautkaserhang with chairlift continues to be the SKI Alpin base and will be in operation.

The cable car runs all year round anyway.”

In addition, there will still be winter sports on the Jenner, “just a little changed”.

You create offers for the guests you have.

“This includes a second, simple toboggan run for families with small children, which we have identified at the middle station.

This means that the Jennerwiesen chairlift will also be better utilized.” There is a ski route in open, unprepared terrain for tourers and snowshoe hikers, and winter hikers are also welcome on the Jenner.

The restaurants at the mountain and middle stations are also open during the cable car's operating hours.

Guests can enjoy the winter here with sun and beautiful views.
