The Center for Environment and Culture wants to inspire people to protect nature through education.

The new program has just been presented.

A ray of hope after the severe hail damage.

Benediktbeuern – It is a ray of hope for the Benediktbeuern monastery.

While repair work on the entire building is in full swing, the Center for Environment and Culture (ZUK) presented its new annual program on Wednesday.

“It’s an incredibly nice date for us,” said ZUK leader Benedikt Hartmann at the press event.

The question has been asked so often whether there could be an educational program at all this year.

The answer he was now able to give was: “Yes, we will be able to do a lot and also have a wide range of offers.”

The ZUK wants to motivate everyone to think for themselves

Due to the situation, the majority of events take place “outside in nature,” says Hartmann.

If covered rooms are required, the ZUK can rely on a multifunctional room and, thanks to various collaborations, also use other rooms, such as in the youth hostel.

“It’s incredibly brilliant that it’s starting again.”

During the Corona times we learned to be flexible, said Doris Linke, Head of Education.

Accordingly, previous knowledge could be incorporated into the program.

“Education is very important in order to overcome the challenges of the time.” There is no single solution to today’s crises, “but we all have to work on it.”

The ZUK wants to motivate everyone to think for themselves.

“Fear doesn’t get us very far, so our core value is that we create positive experiences.”

Bringing education for sustainable development into the classroom

This also includes addressing multipliers.

At the end of February, teachers, environmental or social educators can receive training on how to bring education for sustainable development into the classroom under the title “Sustainability needs goals”.

“It is important to us to offer education for everyone,” says Linke.

The youth conference in April is aimed at young adults aged 15 and over.

The aim is to promote exchange among young people and encourage them to think about how they can shape the world themselves.

The “BeneCulture” sustainability festival, which takes place this year on Saturday, June 1st, is suitable for all age groups.

There will be all sorts of things to do with stalls and music.

Excursions into nature

Jonathan Hehr presented the events for the area of nature conservation.

“We have to get people involved in nature conservation, create acceptance and awareness.” One of the central themes this year: orchards.

The new “variety ark” will play a major role here, where there will be on-site lectures on April 26th, “Orchard Day”.

“Excursions to the monastery land” are also planned.

Another excursion into nature leads to the bird of the year, the lapwing.

“He lives here, but the numbers are declining,” said Hehr.

A lecture will also explain how the bird can be protected.

Another animal can be visited in the “Natural Summer in the Loisach Valley”: during the “Water Buffalo Safari” on August 21st.

Increase appreciation for nature

Manager Benedikt Hartmann was pleased about the “huge range” of the offering.

“In order to make progress in nature conservation, you have to link it closely with education.” This way, you can increase your appreciation for nature.

“You can only protect it if you are convinced and enthusiastic about something and know something about it.” Given the many negative influences that young people have to deal with today, the goal of the ZUK is to give something positive.

Hundreds of young people are on the site every week.

“And I have the impression that they leave with a good feeling.” By the way, the offers should be accessible to everyone and the prices are moderate.

But if you can't afford the program, you can call at any time, emphasizes Hartmann.

There are solutions for that.

In the current situation, the ZUK is particularly dependent on donations, as there is currently a lack of income from the guest house.

“We are happy about everyone who supports us – about donations, but also about every child, every adult and every pensioner who takes part here.”
