Massive resistance to refugee accommodation in Warngau: 800 participants at a citizens' meeting

District Administrator Olaf von Löwis felt the loud anger of the audience when he - accompanied by security forces - explained the background to the planned asylum accommodation for up to 500 refugees on the local Vivo site at the citizens' meeting in the Post guesthouse in Warngau on Monday explained and defended.

While hundreds of thousands of citizens across Germany are taking to the streets to preserve democracy, von Löwis is currently encountering massive resistance to implementing the laws of this constitutional state.

The turnout for the town hall meeting was enormous.

The hall was already packed around an hour before the start.

In addition, several hundred people gathered in front of the post office with anti-government banners and whistles.

According to the police, a total of 800 citizens took part in the citizens' meeting.

The road in front of the inn was blocked on both sides with honking tractors and orange warning lights.

While police forces calmly maintained order, the fire department redirected traffic.

As is well known, the district office is planning refugee accommodation for up to 500 people on the Vivo site for a period of two years.

Flanked by the container accommodation in Moarhölzl in Holzkirchner, which is around 2.5 kilometers away as the crow flies, with around 250 beds, the three gymnasiums in Miesbach and Tegernsee, which have been occupied for two years, are to be freed up in a kind of liberation move.

Over the course of two years, the refugees will then be accommodated in up to ten smaller centers across the district.

At the start, Warngau Mayor Klaus Thurnhuber described the chronology from the time it became known to the unanimous rejection of the accommodation in the local council.

He concluded: “The system is too big and overwhelms our administration, schools and childcare facilities.”

Massive resistance to refugee accommodation in Warngau: expressions of displeasure against district administrator Olaf von Löwis

Von Löwis described the hopelessness and conflict he faces as an administrative official and politically elected district administrator as follows: “The current refugee policy is catastrophic.

The protection of the EU's external borders is a total failure and if I were a refugee, I would of course also try to come to Germany." According to von Löwis, his own opinion does not legally release him from having to accommodate the refugees assigned in recent months - almost 50 every two weeks.

This, and the explanation as to why the property at Vivo was chosen as the only area belonging to the district in the required size, apparently did not interest anyone in or in front of the hall.

The first deafening expressions of discontent arose.

Massive resistance to refugee accommodation in Warngau: concerns among the audience

In the meantime, von Löwis only received cautious applause from local councilors in the first row of seats.

In some cases, the questions voiced by citizens, such as “Why are refugees coming from Turkey?” or “What about the promised repatriations?” were far removed from the actual topic and the district administrator's competences.

Peter Oblak, who runs a sports car business in Birkerfeld, was clearer: “Who is liable if my vehicles are damaged?

None of them have liability insurance." He doesn't want to be put in the right-wing corner. Oblak said he understands the situation, but in conversations with other business owners in Birkerfeld he has heard that no one wants this asylum accommodation.

Several citizens are extremely concerned about the safety of their children.

“I will definitely no longer let my eleven-year-old daughter ride the Hoki bus alone,” was one statement, “I will forbid my children from running around outside alone,” another.

A loudly applauded question was: “Can young men from asylum accommodation be prevented from entering public bathing establishments?”

In this context, Monika Gschwendtner and her daughter von Löwis handed over a petition with 3,793 signatures against the asylum accommodation.

Fears of imported diseases such as TB and drug trafficking were further concerns.

In summary, von Löwis stated: “Of course I cannot rule out the possibility that incidents will occur, but we are not talking about a horde of criminals here, but first and foremost about people.

Article 1 of the Basic Law also applies to them, according to which human dignity is inviolable.

And as long as this law is in effect, I will abide by it.”

With regard to health care, the district administrator explained that the asylum seekers brought to the district all receive medical care in an anchor center and are also registered.

There is not yet a concept regarding the handling of narcotics, and new laws have just been passed by the federal government.

Von Löwis remained silent about the disclosure of the costs, which was often requested by the meeting: “It concerns the awarding of contracts under private law, which are always not dealt with publicly.” At least von Löwis leaned so far out of the window that he did so during the meeting Holzkirchen considers the twelve to fifteen million euros thrown into the discussion by a market town council to be significantly too high.

Massive resistance to refugee accommodation in Warngau: Votes for more solidarity

Even though they described the size of the accommodation as too big, in addition to the former Warngau local councilor and doctor Winfried Dresel, the local councilors Anton Bader (FWG) and Michael Spannring (Greens) provided support accompanied by boos and Löwis.

Spannring complained about the lack of solidarity in some district communities and the heated atmosphere: “I lack humanity in this extremely difficult situation.

It’s not ideal, but we just have a duty to cooperate.”

With the tenor: “We pay taxes, we create,” there were loud calls for the district administrator to resign.

Von Löwis countered this by saying that, despite some laws and regulations, he was “stoked” about living in a constitutional state: “If someone thinks they have to bend or abolish it, my resignation would certainly not help them.”

The heated speech by Alexandra Motschmann from Gmund, who introduced herself as a representative of Die Basis, Values Union and AfD, as well as the appearance of the Rosenheim AfD state parliament member Andreas Winhart showed that the Warngau citizens' meeting attracted attention beyond the municipal and district borders.

He recommended that the local council impose a change ban on the property: “Then you have at least gained two years.” AfD is working, he then wrote on “X” (formerly Twitter).

The meeting then specifically asked Thurnhuber to sue against this “mass allocation” in the event that the community agreement was replaced by the district office.

“If we have a chance of success, we will do it,” said the town hall boss.
