In the Créteil academy, they have become an essential crutch for the proper functioning of the public education service.

Each year, many contract workers are hired to make up for the shortage of tenured teachers.

Since the start of the September school year, Manuela* has become a contract Spanish teacher at the Gisèle-Halimi college in Aubervilliers, an establishment classified as a reinforced priority education network.

This Thursday, her colleagues mobilized by organizing a picnic in front of the establishment, fearing that this thirty-year-old would lose her position.

Of Peruvian nationality, the young woman failed to renew her residence permit with the Seine-Saint-Denis prefecture.

His papers expired on February 2.

“However, I had anticipated the situation,” she assures.

My contract lasts until August, but I knew that my residence permit was going to end in February.

As early as October, I tried to get an appointment at the prefecture, but the process took a very long time.

The file is not moving forward.

I was unable to renew my papers on time.

For the educational team, their retention is essential.

“We launched a petition,” said a teacher.

If she can't finish her contract, there's a good chance she won't be replaced.

We already have two absent teachers who have not been replaced in the establishment, including one in French.

We can't afford to lose a third.

» This professor criticizes the rectorate for its lack of responsiveness.

“In these cases, it is very important that he supports requests for regularization, but he does not do it systematically and does not anticipate difficulties,” he regrets.

Unions are regularly contacted “for residence permit problems”

Thursday, after the mobilization, Manuela's situation changed.

“The human resources department of the rectorate told me that they would support my request to the prefecture,” she announced to us this Friday morning.

In the afternoon, however, the young woman received a phone call from another department at the rectorate telling her that her contract was going to have to be terminated.

Contacted, the Créteil rectorate explains on the contrary that the contractual contract should not be interrupted.

I confirm that as part of his residence permit renewal, the renewal of his contract is correlated, and on the basis of the documents provided by the prefecture is not interrupted;

How many foreign contract teachers does the Créteil academy have?

“No figures have ever been presented in the social report of the CSE (

), describes Grégory Thuizat, departmental co-secretary of Snes-FSU 93, secondary school teachers' union.

I don't know if they are counted but our union is in any case regularly contacted for residence permit problems.

The Sud Éducation 93 union, for its part, indicates that it was contacted this week by two foreign education assistants also having difficulty renewing their papers.

Requested by Le Parisien, the Créteil rectorate did not respond to our questions in time.
