In the midst of a period of protest by the French government and farmers against the agreement with Mercosur, the European Commissioner for Trade, Valdis Dombrovskis, had some good arguments to put against them on Friday.
By highlighting the positive results of the agreement signed with Ottawa in 2016, the famous CETA, which also raised a lot of criticism in its time.
Far from having destroyed European agriculture, in 2022 it allowed an increase in trade in goods by 66% (77 billion euros) and services by 62% (41 billion) compared to 2016.
This treaty, applied provisionally for commercial exchanges - it is in the ratification phase of national parliaments on the investment aspect - would even become ever more virtuous.
