Will the three wind turbines planned in the Höhenkirchner Forest use the climate-damaging gas sulfur hexalfluoride (SF6)?

The CSU parliamentary group is demanding clarification.

Höhenkirchen-Siegertsbrunn

- The CSU parliamentary group is demanding clarification regarding wind turbines from the managing director of Bürgerwind Höhenkirchner Forst GmbH & Co. KG, Robert Sing.

Sing should report to the next Environment, Energy and Transport Committee on whether or not the climate-damaging gas sulfur hexalfluoride (SF6) will be used in the three wind turbines planned for the Höhenkirchner Forest.

CSU parliamentary group leader Roland Spingler told Mayor Mindy Konwitschny (SPD) this in the local council.

No release for the German market

As reported, the Environment, Energy and Transport Committee decided in autumn 2022 that the wind turbines in the Höhenkirchner Forest should be built without SF6.

As it has now become clear, there is still no release for the German market for wind turbines with SF6-free switchgear.

This statement caused irritation not only among Spingler, who is critical of the wind power project in the local forest.

Wind turbine supporter Otto Bußjäger from the Independent Citizens, who brought the SF6 problem to the table about a year and a half ago, also wants to see the local council's decision actually implemented by the administration.

Transfer stations definitely SF6-free

As Konwitschny now emphasized to the local council, the transfer stations required to operate the systems are definitely SF6-free.

This is exactly where the risk of some of the gas escaping is greatest.

It is not yet “one hundred percent certain” that sulfur hexalfluoride can also be used in the nacelles of wind turbines.

“But we assume that the necessary approvals will come before the approvals,” said the mayor.

Only wind turbines without gear oil are permitted

The systems that the Emerson company will build in the Höhenkirchner Forest are state-of-the-art, Konwitschny continued.

There are no other companies that offer wind turbines without SF6 that have such a height and output.

She reminded that because it is a location in the forest, you are only allowed to build wind turbines without gear oil.

Spingler replied that Sing's statements at the environmental committee meeting at the time suggested otherwise.

At the time, Sing said in the committee that building wind turbines without SF6 would not be a problem.
