Depression is a widespread disease and is extremely present.

A city in Bavaria has a particularly high number of sick people and is at the top of the table in the Free State.

Munich – The head feels empty, the drive is non-existent and self-esteem is reduced to a minimum.

These are examples of symptoms that people with depression may have.

This mental illness is very present in the middle of our society, but those affected are still confronted with great stigmatization, such as being lazy or not being able to pull themselves together.

The Morbidity and Social Atlas from the Barmer Institute for Health Systems Research makes it clear how many people actually suffer from the disease.

Accordingly, around 11.3 percent of citizens in Bavaria suffered from depression in 2021.

It doesn't matter whether it was mild, moderate or severe depression (more on the severity levels in the information box).

With depression, those affected often suffer from a low mood.

Depression in Bavaria: Lower Bavarian city has the most sufferers in the Free State

With this value, the Free State is 0.2 percent above the national average of 11.1 percent.

The city with the most people affected is Straubing in Lower Bavaria.

16.2 percent of people there were suffering from depression, an increase of 4.5 percent compared to the national average.

This is followed by Ansbach (15.6 percent), Weiden in der Oberpfalz (15.4 percent) and Haßberge (14.9 percent).

Depression in Bavaria: Anyone can suffer from it

What is particularly striking is that most of those affected are 90 years old or older, live on social assistance or have an income of 15,000 to 20,000 euros.

However, depression is not only present in a few population groups, it can affect anyone - regardless of age or social status.

What is important is that depression can be treated so that those affected can feel an improvement.
