The manufacturers of electric cars are currently outdoing each other with discounts or price reductions - in some cases buyers are saving up to 40 percent.

And it could even be cheaper.

Munich - Actually, it looked like anything but good times for those interested in electric cars when Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) canceled the so-called environmental bonus in December - from one day to the next.

At the time, it was feared that buyers of electric cars would now have to dig significantly deeper into their pockets.

But the manufacturers of electric vehicles reacted relatively quickly - much to the delight of buyers.

Dacia is where electric car buyers are currently saving the most

A study by the ADAC shows where the savings potential is particularly high.

The blockbuster from industry leader Tesla, the Model Y, is currently available for 1,900 to 5,000 euros cheaper than at the end of last year.

However, this is significantly exceeded by the Chinese newcomer BYD, which sold more electric cars than Tesla for the first time in the fourth quarter of 2023: The Chinese are currently offering the Atto 3 model for 21 percent less, and the Han model for more than 25 percent cheaper still in December.

But the Romanian manufacturer Dacia is currently outperforming all competitors and is offering a discount of around 10,000 euros on the Spring Electric - that's over 40 percent.

Tesla could further heat up the discount war

And the price war could even continue.

This is what car expert Ferdinand Dudenhöffer suspected in an interview with

Spiegel

.

According to his analysis, the average price of a Tesla vehicle has already fallen from $52,000 to $45,200 last year.

And since the return on sales, i.e. the percentage ratio of profit compared to sales, was recently more than nine percent, Dudenhöffer definitely sees scope for further price reductions.

The price war between Tesla and Chinese and European manufacturers could help Elon Musk's company push out competitors, says Dudenhöffer - and thus increase returns in the long term.
