Hanover – The customs officers at Hanover Airport were surprised: Last Friday, February 2nd, they made an extremely disgusting discovery in the luggage of a woman who had returned from Benin.

Instead of the usual clothing or similar items, two of the five suitcases contained around 40 kilograms of unrefrigerated meat and fish products.

As customs announced on February 9th, this is not necessarily an isolated case: "Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for us to find meat products in travelers' luggage, but given the quantity, it was an extraordinary find even for my experienced colleagues." Enrico Bacher, press spokesman for the Hanover Main Customs Office, is quoted as saying in a statement.

In October 2023, officials at the airport made a similar disgusting discovery with 8 kilograms of unrefrigerated meat.

In this context, customs explained that two tons of animal products had to be confiscated at Hannover Airport alone in 2022.

At the beginning of February, customs officers found around 40 kilograms of unrefrigerated meat and fish products in a suitcase at Hanover Airport.

Unfortunately, such discoveries are not an isolated case.

Travelers carrying meat, milk and products made from them must undergo veterinary checks at a border inspection post when entering the European Union.

In addition, the products must be accompanied by specified health certificates and a valid accompanying document (common health entry document).
