The old parish hall of the Revelation Church in Berg am Laim cannot be renovated and must be demolished.

Pastor Felix Breitling is already looking forward to the new building.

Pastor Felix Breitling and his family recently moved out of the parish hall of the Church of the Revelation in Berg am Laim.

Because his current apartment is scheduled to be demolished in March.

The old building from 1928 is dilapidated and no longer makes sense to renovate.

Kitchen, Telefin IT - everything is dilapidated

“The youth cellar has not been usable for years due to moisture, the house is not barrier-free and is therefore a problem for community members with wheelchairs or walkers,” says Breitling.

Kitchen, telephone, IT – everything is old and dilapidated.

In addition: The toilets, which are also not barrier-free, are located in the neighboring parish office.

And now it had to be closed because of mold.

In the low-rise building from 1962, the roof is no longer tight despite multiple repairs.

Both buildings are now being removed.

In its place, a new building is being built into which everything will be integrated.

In addition to a larger hall, there will also be a small group room.

And finally a youth cellar with a separate entrance.

The rectory is also located on the ground floor.

Rooms for Diakonie residential groups for people with epilepsy are planned on the first and second floors, and there is a new parish apartment at the top.

New construction will be sustainable and climate-friendly

Everything should be barrier-free, sustainable and climate-friendly: from the heat pump in the basement to the innovative green facades to the photovoltaic system on the roof.

“It will be a building for the future,” explains Pastor Breitling.

There was hardly any discussion in the community about demolition and new construction.

Only now and then a little melancholy from couples who can still remember their wedding in the former prayer room in the community center.

“But it was plausible to everyone that it was necessary.” That’s why you hear one word above all in the community: Finally!

We are looking forward to something completely new, says Breitling.

The new building costs 6.2 million euros

“We are then open to the entire district and all groups, after all there are not that many barrier-free rooms in Berg am Laim.” Some community members have already actively started cleaning out and packing.

This is not the only area where the church community may need further help.

“We are looking for people who can develop creative ideas for fundraising as a team.” Because the community has to finance around 4.4 million euros of the project, which costs a total of 6.2 million euros, itself.

3.3 million are covered by grants and loans, for the rest we have access to 350,000 euros in equity capital and rely on donations, campaigns, other external funding and a long-term bank loan.

“Every amount counts, we are grateful for everything,” emphasizes the priest.

A “very big mountain” will fall off his heart when everything is finished.

The last thing he will take out of the house before it is demolished will probably be the cross in the parish hall.

It is the miniature design of the cross that stands on the Church of the Revelation next door.

The small cross will definitely have its place again in the new building, promises Pastor Breitling, who hopes to be able to move there again at the end of 2025.
