In Sudan, the Wagner Group of the Ukraine War is fighting against Ukrainian special forces.
In a video, Ukrainians interrogate captured mercenaries.
Khartoum - The assumption has been raised since last year: the war in Ukraine is not only taking place on the home front.
Ukrainian special forces are said to be fighting against Russian mercenaries in the civil war-torn country of Sudan, around 5,000 kilometers away.
A video now shows Ukrainians interrogating members of the Wagner troupe.

Three men are then shown kneeling, blindfolded and tied up.
Two employees interrogate the Russian-speaking prisoner.
He admits to being part of the “Private Military Company” (PMC) Wagner.
“What rank do you have?” translates a Ukrainian secret service agent to his colleague’s question.
“Soldier,” replies the mercenary.
“How many of you are here?” asks the Ukrainian.
The answer: “100 people.”

His group drove through the Central African Republic (CAR) to Khartoum with the aim of overthrowing the local government.
“Ask him how much he earns,” said the Ukrainian soldier.
“$1,000,” the prisoner replies.
In addition to the Russian-speaking soldier, two African prisoners are also being interrogated, who were presumably recruited on site by the Wagner mercenaries.

Russia, along with the Wagner Group, was directly involved in the 2019 coup in Sudan by supporting and supplying weapons to Hemeti and his fighters in the conflict.
Including surface-to-air missiles to the RSF militia.
According to press reports, the late founder of the mercenary group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, had gold worth at least four billion dollars flown to Russia via Syria and the Arab Emirates.
Weakened by sanctions, the money also helped the Russian government.

The background to the military intervention by Ukrainian soldiers is apparently the continued illegal export of Sudanese gold to Moscow, which is used to finance the war against Ukraine.
In addition, HUR boss Kyrylo Budanov vowed in May 2023 to “destroy Russian war criminals around the world, wherever they are.”
On the way back from the UN People's Assembly in New York in 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy unexpectedly met the Chairman of the Sudanese Sovereign Council, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan.
After the meeting at Ireland's Shannon Airport, the Ukrainian wrote on X, formerly Twitter: "We discussed common security challenges, especially the activities of illegal armed groups financed by Russia." (
