Now the Houthi militia is also threatening Italy.
Because the country is taking part in the EU maritime mission “Aspides”, it must expect retaliation.
Sanaa - Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto's announcement of an admiral for an EU-led maritime mission on the Red Sea has angered the Houthi militia.
According to
Fox News,
the head of the Houthis' Supreme Revolutionary Committee, Mohamed Ali al-Houthi, called on Italy to remain neutral.
If the country contributes to attacks on Houthi positions, it will make itself the target of retaliation.
“The European Union today asked Italy to provide the force commander for the Aspides operation in the Red Sea,” Crosetto said, noting that Greece would likely assume overall command of the mission.
This has not yet been officially announced, the American TV station quotes the EU foreign policy chief.
The sea mission called “Aspides” is scheduled to begin on February 17th.
Translated in ancient Greek, it means “protector.”

EU wants to protect merchant ships from attacks by Houthi rebels from Yemen
The EU naval operation in the Middle East, which is about to begin, could also protect merchant ships from possible threats from Iran.
According to information from the
German Press Agency
, the decision for Operation Aspides shows that European warships are to accompany not only the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, but also the Strait of Hormuz, the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman Merchant ships can be used.
All three of these sea areas lie off the coast of Iran.
The primary aim of the EU operation is to protect merchant ships from attacks by the militant Islamist Houthi rebels from Yemen.
The militia wants to force an end to the Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip by shelling ships, which followed the unprecedented massacre by the Islamist Hamas in Israel on October 7th.
The US and Britain attack Houthi targets in Yemen
Given the dangers, major shipping companies are increasingly avoiding the shortest sea route between Asia and Europe through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal.
This now has a significant impact on the global economy.
The USA and Great Britain are therefore directly attacking Houthi targets in Yemen.
