In July 2014, a man is brutally killed with a samurai sword by his cousin.

Almost ten years later, the defendant admits responsibility for the death and now has to go to prison.

Salzgitter/Braunschweig - Almost ten years after a fatal samurai sword attack in Salzgitter, Lower Saxony, a 43-year-old man has been sentenced to nine years in prison.

The Braunschweig regional court found the defendant guilty of manslaughter on Friday.

According to the conviction of the criminal chamber, the German of Filipino descent killed his cousin in July 2014 by first hitting him on the head with an empty glass bottle and then stabbing him several times with a samurai sword.

During the trial, the defendant admitted responsibility for his cousin's death.

However, he denied murder out of greed, as initially accused by the public prosecutor.

According to his description, an argument escalated in the then 41-year-old's apartment, during which he also felt threatened.

The presiding judge said that the confession was credible, but the information about the events of the crime was doubtful.

With the sentence, the court fell short of the public prosecutor's demand of twelve years in prison for manslaughter.

The defense had requested four years for manslaughter in a less serious case.

The judgment is not final, but an appeal against it is possible.
