A lack of staff and problems in the MVG workshops lead to train cancellations and delays every day.
When that will change is unclear.
Munich – The Munich transport company (MVG) has a personnel problem.
Connections are canceled every day and bus and train delays are increasing.
The main reason – 120 positions are unfilled.
110 additional employees will leave the company due to age in the coming years.
Almost daily train cancellations at MVG cause frustration for many Munich residents.

A lack of staff in the workshop regularly leads to train cancellations
There is a lack of staff, particularly in the workshops.
There are currently around 60 positions for mechanics, electricians, mechatronics engineers and electronics technicians unfilled at MVG.
This ensures that trams and subways are regularly not operational and fail.
There are also problems when retrofitting older trains with modern fire protection technology.
This also causes disruptions on the subway.
This is how punctual MVG has been in recent years (in percent):

This is what the MVG is doing specifically to combat the staff shortage
Since MVG has difficulty finding suitable skilled workers in Germany, employees are now even being recruited from abroad.
In Spain, 20 bus drivers are currently being trained for MVG.
This concept should be expanded if successful.
In addition to expanding our own driving school, bus drivers will also be trained at external driving schools in the future.
The MVG is also working with the job center on a migration program.
As part of this program, 8 bus drivers are already being trained.
“In the area of tram and subway workshops, we will be offering dual study programs from 2024,” says MVG press spokesman Maximilian Kaltner.

Tram driver as a study job?
– This is possible at MVG
“The personnel market is highly competitive,” says Maximilian Kaltner, MVG.
That's why we rely on proven and new target groups.
After just seven weeks of training, it is possible as a student to work as a tram driver at MVG.
The training was specially adapted for students.
During the seven-week semester break, the students are then trained in small groups to become fully-fledged tram drivers.
It is then possible to work part-time at MVG alongside your studies.
“The working hours are flexible and can be planned if possible,” explains the MVG spokesman.
When will the trains run as usual again?
MVG spokesman Kaltner cannot say when the trains in the Bavarian capital will run again as usual: “We are working with the highest priority on making the usual service available to passengers again as quickly as possible.
I can’t give you a more specific time at the moment.”
