In a nationwide raid, Brazilian police executed several arrest warrants and confiscated passports.

Including that of the former head of state.

Brasilia - Because the former President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, and some of his close political allies are accused of an attempted coup, numerous people from Bolsonaro's environment are currently being investigated.

According to media reports, on Thursday (February 8th) there was a nationwide operation by the Brazilian Federal Police, as part of which 33 house searches were carried out and four arrest warrants were executed.

Officially, the authorities in Brazil are talking about investigations against a “criminal organization that was involved in an attempted coup (…) to keep the then president in power.”

As a result of the searches, it was also ordered that the passports of several suspects should be confiscated, including Bolsonaro's papers.

His lawyer Fabio Wajngarten then announced via the short message service X that his client would comply with the request.

According to a report by the Brazilian news portal Globo,

the passport has

now been handed over to the authorities.

Investigations in Brazil against Bolsonaro after disinformation campaign and demonstration in Brasilia

The reason for the allegations was the behavior of Bolsonaro and his supporters after the ultra-right then incumbent's defeat in the 2022 presidential election. Bolsonaro and some of his political colleagues had warned of electoral fraud months before the election.

When President Lula da Silva's narrow election victory was announced after the second round of voting in October, Bolsonaro explicitly refused to recognize the election results.

As a result, on January 8, 2023, a week after Lula da Silva's inauguration, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters marched in the government district of the Brazilian capital Brasilia.

Several government buildings, including Congress, the seat of government and the Supreme Court, were stormed and significant damage was caused.

Brazil's former President Bolsonaro: The election ban is now being followed by further investigations

It has been known for some time that Bolsonaro and several of his political associates, including several generals and Bolsonaro's former defense minister Walter Braga Netto, are being investigated.

In a Supreme Court decision last summer, the ex-president was banned from all political office for at least eight years based on the allegations.

report, Bolsonaro's name was mentioned more than 70 times in the court decision underlying the search operation.

Accordingly, there is numerous evidence that would justify the allegations against the ex-president.

On Thursday, Brazilian media had already published a recording of a cabinet meeting from the summer of 2022, at which the spread of disinformation in the run-up to the election was discussed.

The video also plays an important role in the police investigation.
