Rock, paper and undress?

Sorry to ruin your childhood memories, but we found out that the game of chance "rock, paper and scissors" which is known to help make difficult decisions sometimes, actually started as a preliminary game in brothels.

"So, 'Rock, Paper and Scissors' started as a sex game," Irish historian and podcast host Katie Charlwood revealed to her shocked TikTok audience of more than 354,000 followers.

"Technically, it originally started as sensukumi-ken, which was a Chinese drinking game," she explained, "but when the game traveled through Japan in the 17th and 18th centuries, it became incredibly popular in brothels."

The 1998 book, Japan's Culture as Reflected Through Its Leisure, by Sep Linhart and Sabine Frohstock - which Charleswood cites as one of her sources in the viral video - first revealed that "rock, paper and scissors" (known as "genkenpon" or " Jen-ken" in Japan) has humble roots in Asian culture.

"It existed in the Edo period, at least from the year 1700 onwards, and was used as a drinking game or as a kind of foreplay in the amusement areas," the authors reported, adding that the game eventually gained popularity outside the brothels as well, when adults started playing it around the house - and with their children.

"The game has played a huge role in the leisure life of Japanese adults and their children's play world for at least 250 years, but it has undergone a very significant change as it has gone from exotic to ordinary," the notebooks wrote.

Charlwood also revealed the disturbing meaning of "scissors" - and no, the hand movement does not indicate a sexual position that is common mainly among lesbians - but about cutting off the clothes and removing them from the woman's body.

"One version of the game made the players remove an item of clothing every time they lost a round," she claimed, "essentially making a 'rock, paper and scissors' strip game" and according to several references in the literature of the time, it seems that the game played this role especially in homosexual relationships.

Her revelations left viewers shocked.

"I will never tell my kids to solve their problems with a game of 'rock, paper and scissors' again without thinking about it," commented one of the mothers and another commenter added: "All my life I thought it was an innocent way to settle a dispute."

"It's amazing," wrote a surprised viewer, prompting Charlwood to respond: "It's the age-old skill of humans - to make a game and then find a way to make it dirty."
