Unterallgäu - The Unterallgäu district has implemented numerous climate protection measures in recent years - both for citizens, communities and companies as well as within the administration.

Climate protection should continue to be promoted in the future and new ideas should be implemented.

This became clear when climate protection manager Sandra ten Bulte presented the new climate protection concept at the meeting of the Lower Allgäu District Council's Committee for Environment and Climate Protection.

Since 2012, the district has had a concept that forms the basis for its climate protection efforts.

At the beginning of 2023, it was decided to review the status of implementation and create a new, short and application-related concept.

“Over half of the measures from the 2012 concept have now been implemented, and others are currently being implemented,” informed Sandra ten Bulte.

“But there are also some measures that are no longer relevant or cannot be implemented from today’s perspective.”

The new climate protection concept documents what has already been implemented, what is currently being done and what longer-term ideas there are.

It also lists the district's influence and goals, administrative responsibilities and important energy indicators.

For example, the concept contains the latest data from the Bavarian Energy Atlas.

These show that the share of renewable energies in electricity consumption in the Lower Allgäu has more than doubled since 2010 and was already at 70 percent in 2021.

In addition, electricity and heat consumption in Lower Allgäu has fallen significantly since 2010.

However, the data also makes it clear that for a successful energy transition, electricity and heat consumption should be further reduced and the share of renewable energies should be increasingly increased, especially for heat.

Unterallgäu district: New climate protection concept presented - information event on heating with wood planned

Ten Bulte explained how the district is trying to provide support here with various examples and first presented the measures taken by the Climate Protection Unit.

In order to further advance the expansion of a regional energy supply, a regional plant is to be founded.

This should take care of energy production on site and provide the communities - which often lack the resources for this - with personnel and expertise.

According to the climate protection manager, 27 municipalities and the district are currently taking part in business planning.

The legal structure is currently being developed and the first energy projects are being examined.

The communities could then decide whether they actually wanted to participate and help found the regional work.

In addition, with its solar and heat offensive, it is working to increase the use of renewable energies and reduce energy consumption.

This year, information evenings and consultations on the use of photovoltaic systems on single- and multi-family homes are planned, among other things.

The “Check Your House” campaign continues during the warming offensive.

This year, citizens in Buxheim and in the administrative communities of Illerwinkel, Ottobeuren and Bad Grönenbach can get advice on the topic of energy-saving renovation.

In the longer term, an information event on how to properly heat with wood is planned and those willing to build will be provided with information material on energy-efficient and climate change-adapted construction.

District administrator praises the work of the department

In addition to the measures of the Climate Protection Unit, the new concept also includes the climate protection measures of eleven other subject areas at the district office.

For example, the district is increasingly installing photovoltaic systems on its buildings, paying attention to sustainability in new buildings, purchasing green electricity, expanding local public transport, using environmentally friendly materials in everyday office life and supporting moorland renaturation projects.

Among other things, the plan for 2024 is to increase the number of company vehicles with electric drives, which will then be charged with electricity from the photovoltaic system on the roof of the district office.

Measures are also being taken to increase the proportion of regional products in restaurants, canteens and homes.

District Administrator Alex Eder was impressed by the large number of projects and measures, which provide a “great overview” of how committed the district is in this area.

He praised the work of the Climate Protection Unit, which had to reconcile a lot of things.

Because when it comes to climate protection, numerous areas would intertwine.
