There were already a lot of ideas.

But now the local council has voted with a large majority in favor of the temporary use of the disused indoor swimming pool in the Dietramszell district of Ascholding.

Dietramszell – demolition?

Movie theater?

Asylum accommodation?

There were already a few ideas about what could be done with the disused indoor swimming pool in Ascholding.

At the local council meeting on Tuesday evening, the Building Culture Working Group presented a new concept: interim use for cultural purposes - initially limited to one year.

The project was initiated by Katja Bonnländer from Öhnböck.

The painter and video artist would like to convert the drained swimming pool into a studio.

In exchange for free use, it offers the community a cultural program.

“In the summer of 2024 there will be a five to six-week group exhibition with regional and international artists,” she explains when asked by our newspaper.

During this time, weekly tours for kindergarten groups with age-appropriate artist workshops are planned.

As a “homework assignment,” Bonnländer wants to ask the young visitors to sketch previous experiences in the Ascholdinger Baths with the photos they have given them with their parents and grandparents.

This will create a window gallery – “a kind of provincial Instagram,” jokes Bonnländer, who often went swimming in Ascholding with her children.

“At the end we want to organize a big neighborhood festival to which all regional clubs and institutions are invited.”

The Eglinger puts the equivalent value of her cultural program at 10,000 euros.

The largest part of this is the fees for the coordination and the workshops that she sets for herself and the exhibiting artists.

She hopes for financial support from the Professional Association of Visual Artists.

Bonnländer: “Otherwise I do it all out of love.”

The municipality only bears the costs of repairing the toilets, Mayor Josef Hauser explained to the municipal councilors.

According to estimates, they amount to around 2,500 euros.

In addition, he expects monthly electricity costs of 80 euros.

Leaving the building vacant costs the municipality of Dietramszell money

“This is a cultural enrichment for the community,” said council member Ludwig Gröbmaier, praising the concept.

“This brings life back to the indoor swimming pool.” After all, vacancy also costs money.

Last year, according to Hauser, 15,000 euros were set aside in the budget for maintenance.

Some councils saw a problem in the change of use for cultural purposes.

If this is applied for at the district building authority, the requirements for fire protection and statics usually increase.

Gröbmaier argued that this was not necessary in the trial phase or for individual small events.

Bonnländer is also optimistic: “I assume that as a single person I can use the bathroom as a studio without any major structural changes.”

It is not clear whether the district office wants to use the Ascholdinger Bad as refugee accommodation.

The municipality has offered this but has not yet received any response.

“Human life comes before culture,” said town hall boss Hauser.

“If the flow of refugees doesn’t stop, 50 people could be accommodated there.” He is against removing the indoor swimming pool from the properties in question.

Elected representatives vote by a large majority in favor of temporary use

By a large majority, the councilors agreed in principle to a temporary use of the old pool for cultural purposes - under two conditions: On the one hand, the administration should clarify what building law requirements would be associated with it.

On the other hand, the committee determined that cultural use must be ended if refugee accommodation becomes necessary in the property.
