The Alpine warm bath in Benediktbeuern will in future open two hours later on weekdays.

The reasons for this are high costs and staff shortages.

Benediktbeuern

- The local councilors of Benediktbeuern did not make the decision easy.

In their most recent meeting, they discussed intensively how to continue to offer bathers attractive bathing pleasure, but at the same time keep the rising costs of operation in check.

According to managing director Michael Herrmann, the income and expenses at the Alpenwarmbad “differ massively”.

While income remained “stable”, expenses increased sharply last season.

The reason for this is not primarily the high energy costs.

Rather, personnel costs have skyrocketed since the collective agreement in the public sector in 2022/23 - which is particularly noticeable because the supervisory staff in the outdoor pool was increased last season.

Staff is in short supply

In order to get the costs under control, the municipality can now save on staff or increase admission prices.

But the latter “actually fit,” said Herrmann.

His suggestion to reduce costs: reduce opening hours during the week.

Instead of opening at 10 a.m. on weekdays as before, the pool will only open two hours later - at 12 p.m.

However, this should only apply to working days.

On weekends, holidays and public holidays it would remain at 10 a.m.

By opening later, employees would be saved because you could only work with one shift instead of two shifts as before.

This is an advantage because staff is in short supply.

“We are again massively looking for staff,” said Herrmann and emphasized: “We have to be happy when we can open.” This would be more successful if you only had to work one shift.

In addition, if the opening hours were reduced by two hours, around 10,200 euros could be saved in one season (from May to September), according to the manager.

Locals could be put off by later opening times

Not a convincing argument for Hanns-Frank Seller.

He pointed out that the community had consciously decided to afford an outdoor swimming pool.

Thomas Guggemos reminded that the outdoor pool was primarily intended for locals.

Many of them come in the morning and could be put off by the later opening time.

“School swimming is not at risk”

When Hans-Otto Pielmeier asked what consequences this would have for school swimming and the swimming club, Mayor Anton Ortlieb replied that the latter would not be affected by the later opening times.

However, you still have to coordinate with the school.

“School swimming is not at risk,” assured Herrmann.

However, he demanded that schools that use the outdoor pool as part of their lessons make an annual plan as to when school swimming should take place.

In view of the tense budget situation, Ortlieb expressed the fear that the district office could encourage the municipality to make savings during the upcoming budget discussions.

Herrmann agreed with him: Given the challenges facing the monastery village, “the budget will be a challenge”.

New advice in a year

With the dissenting vote from Thomas Guggemos, the later opening time from 12 p.m. on weekdays was finally decided.

After a year, the councils want to discuss the issue again.
