February 10th is Children's Hospice Day every year.

On the occasion of this date, the Maltesers in Gräfelfing are giving an insight into what the work of their children's and youth hospice service looks like in everyday life.

The focus is always on the whole family.

Gräfelfing

- 18 years ago, the German Children's Hospice Association launched Children's Hospice Work Day.

Since then, on February 10th, he has always drawn attention to his goal of “establishing the content of children’s and youth hospice work and its offerings more firmly in society’s perception.”

On the occasion of this date, the hospice service for children and young people from the Malteser based in Gräfelfing is now reporting on what support offers can look like for families with children and young people who are suffering from a life-shortened illness or are dying.

In addition to supporting sick children, it is always about siblings and the entire family system.

And regular family visits provide space for discussions and relieve the burden on those who care for the sick child in the family.

At the end of January, ten children and young people from families supported by the Maltese Children and Youth Hospice Service were invited to the “Koch Dich Glück” cooking school in Munich.

The young people were accompanied by Ramona Hämisch and Theresa Volk.

The two are volunteer hospice companions, and cook Klara put together a menu with dishes that are healthy but still taste good and can be cooked later at home.

Sustainability was also an aspect.

The children learned from the cook how they can, for example, conjure up something good from older fruit.

Alternate at the mixer

“The young people were incredibly caring towards each other, so everyone was allowed to take turns holding the mixer and rolling their own pasta.

The bigger ones helped the smaller ones.

Some made tomato sauce for everyone, while others gave everyone muesli,” reports hospice helper Theresa Volk.

At the end, a home-cooked three-course menu was on the table, with vegetable wraps, potato wedges and tzatziki, home-made tagliatelle with tomato sauce, zebra cake with banana ice cream and home-made crunchy muesli.

“The time on 'Cook You Happy' was incredibly carefree and easy.

This is a particularly valuable gift for the children and young people we visit and accompany, and also for us, for which a simple thank you is not enough,” says Theresa Volk.

The cooking event was made possible by a donation from the staff of a law firm that collected money for the Maltese Children's Hospice Service before Christmas.

The Malteser hospice service for children and young people can be reached by telephone at (089) 85 80 80-96 0 or by email at kinderhospizdienst.muenchen@malteser.org.

The coordinators will be happy to provide further information.
