The man is considered dangerous and was therefore taken into preventive detention.

He managed to escape at an exit.

Now he is caught.

Berlin - The police caught the criminal who fled Berlin in Schleswig-Holstein.

A spokesman for the Senate Judiciary Administration told the German Press Agency on Saturday upon request.

The 54-year-old was caught on Friday evening in the Dithmarschen district.

The police had been searching for the convicted rapist since Tuesday evening.

He used an escorted exit in Berlin to escape.

The prisoner was in preventive detention at the Tegel Correctional Facility (JVA).

The man was sentenced in 2004 by the Dessau-Roßlau regional court in Saxony-Anhalt to a total sentence of ten years and nine months in prison for rape and deprivation of liberty.

According to the Dessau-Roßlau public prosecutor's office responsible for enforcement, a verdict from the Frankfurt (Oder) regional court for rape from 2001 was also included.

According to the judiciary, the man was initially in custody in Brandenburg.

Because of the seriousness of the crime and because he was classified as dangerous, he was then taken into preventive detention.

He had been imprisoned there since 2011, and in 2019 the man was transferred to preventive detention at the Tegel prison in Berlin.

According to the Berlin justice administration, the criminal has been granted exits since 2021.

The prison authorities are constitutionally obliged to do this, also in order to prepare those affected for a regulated life in freedom, it was said.

According to the judiciary, the 54-year-old was granted numerous such exits - without any complaints being raised.

The Senate Judiciary Administration has now announced that it will use the current case as an opportunity to review the relaxation procedure for those in preventive detention.
