Unterallgäu - Whether in disaster relief, blood donation or senior gymnastics, volunteers are involved in countless areas and lend a hand where support is needed.

The Unterallgäu district is no exception.

For exactly such voluntary work, members of the Bavarian Red Cross and the Maltese Relief Service were recently awarded the Bavarian Interior Minister's Decoration of Honor, which was ceremoniously presented by District Administrator Alex Eder.

Eder praised the honorees' long-standing commitment and showed great respect and recognition for their achievements, because they are very valuable for society.

The following were honored for a total of 25 years of service with the Bavarian Red Cross (BRK): Reinhard Güthler (Sontheim water rescue service), who served, among other things, as a lifeguard, technical manager and rescue diver.

Gerlinde Spiegl (Mindelheim Women's Working Group), who got involved through blood donation campaigns, ticket sales and also through hospital visits.

Marlene Magerl (Mindelheim Women's Working Group) could be found at carnival events, selling raffle tickets and donating blood.

Decorations of honor presented for decades of service - those honored set a positive example

For their efforts over four decades, Susanne Grünwald (Mindelheim Women's Working Group, BRK), who, among other things, organized seniors' afternoons and senior gymnastics, Johann Filgis (BRK Ottobeuren-Bad Grönenbach), who was involved in disaster control, Heidi Pöschl (Mindelheim Women's Working Group, BRK), the was honored in absentia and Stephan Schmidt (Maltese Relief Service Bad Wörishofen), who acted as organizational manager of the rescue service, was honored.

Georg Rinninger (Bad Grönenbach water rescue service) and Gebhard Miller (BRK Ottobeuren-Bad Grönenbach) were honored with the great decoration for their now proud 50 years of service with the BRK.

Rinninger played a crucial role within the water rescue service in terms of organizing and leading the group and was a trainer for the lifeguards.

In addition, the offer of the natural outdoor pool in Bad Grönenbach would not be sustainable without his commitment.

Miller was often present at festivities in the medical service and was also involved in disaster control and blood donation campaigns.

With their efforts, the nine honorees are helping to “make the world a better place,” said the district administrator, because their example shows that each individual can make a difference.
