A lot of secondary school students arrive late for class because the buses don't reach their destination on time.

The district's planning committee is now expanding the offer.

Ampertal/Freising

- They were introduced during Corona times and have proven themselves: the additional buses of the MVV regional bus lines 616 and 619, which transport students to Freising from the communities of Allershausen, Hohenkammer and Kranzberg.

This offer is now being expanded: larger buses, shorter routes, faster connections.

Essentially, it's about the Gute Änger secondary school, which started operations at the beginning of the 2018/2019 school year, the district's planning committee said on Thursday.

The contracts

The transport contracts for the two MVV regional bus routes 616 and 619 have been running since December 2016. Since then, school transport from the west of the district to secondary schools in Freising has not only seen increasing student numbers, but also one more stop.

The secondary school traffic was aimed solely at the Karl-Meichelbeck-Realschule; on the way there or afterwards, the other secondary school locations in the Freising city area and Kammergasse as an important transfer point were also served.

With the opening of the Gute Änger secondary school, to which the students from the west of the district were assigned, this school also had to be served.

The result: “The buses drove all over the place,” as District Administrator Helmut Petz put it.

The students often arrived late for school to start at 7:55 a.m.

This nuisance, which parents and mayors complained about to the district (we have reported), cannot be remedied by changing the start of school to 8 a.m., says Petz, because the school has so far refused to do so.

The solution - and it has been particularly attractive since the Freising West Tangente opened in January 2022: two large articulated buses are used, which travel directly to the Gute Änger secondary school via the West and then the South Tangent without any detours.

The planning committee discussed this option in advance and then publicly gave it the green light on Thursday.

The suggestion

At the suggestion of Michael Stanglmaier (Greens) and Tobias Weiskopf (FDP), the administration's suggestion that these “express trips” only be offered in the mornings because school traffic would be equalized at lunchtime due to different end times for classes was changed: the two express bus lines are also offered at lunchtime .

The additional effort is clear, so the argument goes: the costs until the end of the contract term in December 2026 amount to 880,000 euros for the morning offer and just under one million euros for the morning and lunch offers.

The decision for the latter option was made with a vote of 8:5.

It should start after the Easter holidays in 2024.
