A week after a bomb exploded in front of the Labor Ministry in Athens, Greek police announced on Saturday that they had arrested four men accused of possessing explosives.
The bomb, which exploded at dawn on Friday February 3 without causing any casualties, had been placed in a backpack and hung on the gates in front of the ministry.
The suspects were arrested Friday
“for manufacturing and possession of explosives and incendiary materials
,” police said in a statement Saturday.
The arrests were not immediately linked to the explosion, but one of the men had previously been linked to an extremist group, the police statement said.
Group from an anarchist organization
According to Greek media, this group is the Cells of Fire Conspiracy, an anarchist organization whose members are serving long prison sentences for carrying out letter bomb attacks.
An anonymous source who called a Greek daily to warn of the impending February 3 explosion claimed to be a member of the Self-Defense of the Revolutionary Class, a previously unknown organization.
Attacks against public establishments, banks and diplomatic representations have been recurring in Greece for years.
They are generally attributed to far-left or anarchist movements.
