Franz Maier has been a member of the Hohenschäftlarn fire department for 70 years.

For this he has now received an extraordinary award.

Hohenschäftlarn

– A special, rare honor took place at the Hohenschäftlarn fire department as part of the annual meeting.

Franz Maier, now 92 years old, can look back on over 70 years of membership in the Hohenschäftlarn Volunteer Fire Department - making him the longest-serving member of the club.

In 1950, Maier enrolled in the fire department as an 18-year-old.

In 1961 he was appointed district fire chief

“The equipment shed on Schorner Strasse was just being built at that time,” he remembers.

“My first job was with the shovel and the wheelbarrow, so to speak.” Maier soon drew attention for his immense specialist knowledge and his constant willingness to work.

In 1961 he was appointed district fire chief for the old district of Wolfratshausen.

“It was our district fire inspector at the time, Hans Fagner from Wolfratshausen, who was to blame,” the 92-year-old continues.

“He said, 'I need a district fire chief, can you do that?'” Maier thought about it – and agreed.

“The 70s and 80s were tough”

In 1973 he became chief fire chief, in 1977 the fire department comrades unanimously elected him second commander, and in 1979 he took over the top position, which he held until 1984.

A number of major fires also occurred during his time in office, all of which were caused by arson.

“Yes, the 70s and 80s were tough,” he says today, laughing.

Maier's commitment did not go unnoticed.

In 1983 he was awarded the achievement badge in gold-red, followed in 1990 by the badge of honor in gold, and his comrades in “his” military made him an honorary member.

Now the 92-year-old was asked to come forward again at the Hohenschäftlarner annual meeting.

“70 years of club membership is absolutely rare,” said chairman Martin Doll.

As a gift, he and his deputy Andreas Norbach presented the jubilarian with an old fireman's helmet (“Our unique item, another unique item”) along with best wishes.

“We are happy that you are joining us.”

More honors.

Konrad Doll, Johann Gmeinwieser, Ludwig Zambelli and Josef Schmid (all 60 years of membership) were also honored for long-term membership. Michael Waldherr, Andreas Becker, Werner Wagenhäuser, Herman Lutz, Josef Arnold and Andreas Ertl were honored for 50 years with the club.

Rupert Doll, Kurt Zimmer, Stefan Hiss, Jürgen Flörcke, Gerhard Sandner, Clemens Gruber and Konrad Doll can look back on 40 years.
