The House of Representatives will vote again next Tuesday in a new attempt to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas after a first effort by Republicans failed this week.

Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-Louisiana, suggested Friday that the second vote would occur Tuesday night.

Mayorkas survived a first attempt with 214 votes in favor and 216 against.

Republicans are seeking to impeach Mayorkas over his handling of the southern border between Mexico and the United States.

All Democrats and three Republicans — Ken Buck of Colorado, Tom McClintock of California and Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin — voted against impeachment on Tuesday.

Rep. Blake Moore, R-Utah, vice chair of the GOP conference, also rejected the measure, but only to allow members of his party to re-introduce it under procedural rules.

Scalise is expected to return to Washington next week after undergoing treatment for blood cancer.

His absence was one of the reasons Republicans fell short in the vote.

With Scalise's support, and if all members are present and vote, House Republicans can afford to lose three votes on the

resolution .

The absence of any of the party members could put her in danger.

Republicans also face the possibility that Democrats will soon win a House seat by winning New York's special election for the 3rd Congressional District, which will be held on Tuesday.

The seat became vacant in December when former Republican Congressman George Santos was expelled following a federal indictment and an Ethics Committee investigation.

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-Louisiana, and other House Republicans have criticized the Biden Administration for its handling of border security, noting that it reached records for irregular migrant crossings at the southern border who reached more than 10,000 a day in December.

In January, the House Homeland Security Committee voted in favor of two articles of

impeachment

 against Mayorkas.

The first article accuses Mayorkas of “voluntarily and systematically” refusing to comply with federal immigration laws, which has led to “millions” of migrants entering the country irregularly and “many remaining illegally in the United States.”

The second article maintains that Mayorkas “violated the public trust” by making false statements to Congress and knowingly obstructing congressional oversight of his agency.

The Department of Homeland Security did not react Friday to the new vote, but in an earlier memo it criticized the impeachment effort

,

calling it a “farce” and “a distraction from other vital national security priorities and the work Congress should be doing.” to actually fix our broken immigration laws.”

The White House has supported Mayorkas, calling the

GOP

impeachment effort “extreme far-right policies” and “unconstitutional.”
