When church bells still rang when the alarm went off

Highlights: Erling-Andechs local fire department was founded 150 years ago at the behest of a decree from 1869. The fire brigade was officially confirmed in 1874 when, according to the chronicle, “Fire brigade captain Jakob Vogler and first board member Georg Sedlmeir as well as 49 respectable citizens” founded the association. At that time, Erling had a larger population than Herrsching. The comrades were on the move with, among other things, a “wooden extension ladder” mounted on a cart.

Like many other volunteer fire departments in the district in the same year, shortly before or after, the Erling-Andechs local fire department was founded 150 years ago at the behest of a decree from 1869.

A big festival weekend with a parade is planned for June.

Erling

– From bucket brigades to hand pumps to the use of motorized fire pumps: The Erling-Andechs Volunteer Fire Department is celebrating its 150th birthday.

But the history of Erling's fire department goes back much further, namely 204 years.

One of the operations that will probably always be remembered was the operation after the alleged meteorite impact in Hannawies, which caused a stir around the world in 1995.

The founding anniversary of the volunteer fire department is celebrated in the summer with a parade, a concert and a big party.

Walter Feigl, “director” of the historical museum and former long-time commander of the local fire department, holds a “general fire code” from 1791 in his hands.

The instructions to the population recorded there paint a picture of the living conditions at the time: When they “relieve themselves” in the stable at night, they should take a lantern and not a candle.

And please do not close the fireplace with a wooden door.

The document dated 1820 in which Erling's administration made the purchase of a fire engine also goes back a long way.

A syringe made of wood, with which the firefighters pumped the water out of a fire pond by hand using physical strength.

It is also historically documented that the people of Erling rushed to the aid of the people of Weilheim in 1825 and 1834 when their village was on fire.

The fire brigade was officially confirmed in 1874 when, according to the chronicle, “Fire brigade captain Jakob Vogler and first board member Georg Sedlmeir as well as 49 respectable citizens” founded the association after a royal decree in 1869 decreed that every town should have a voluntary fire brigade, otherwise there would be one Compulsory fire brigade has been decreed.

At that time, Erling had a larger population than Herrsching.

The comrades were on the move with, among other things, a “wooden extension ladder” mounted on a cart, which they dragged to the scene of the fire using muscle power.

The fire brigade association day in 1920 at the “Gastwirtschaft zur Post” is captured in the chronicle with a photo.

Also recorded in history is the day when the monastery shop burned in 1965 and four years later when the cowshed in the monastery caught fire.

At that time, the Erlingers jumped to the aid of the monastery defense force, which existed until 1987.

Feigl knows that Rothenfeld also had its own fire department at that time.

An episode from the cabinet of curiosities is the meteorite that supposedly hit Hannawies on March 5, 1995.

“We were ordered to measure radiation,” remembers Feigl.

They didn't measure anything, because the supposed rocket that made it into the headlines around the world was actually nothing more than a biotope explosion.

The first home of the Erlingen local fire department was a wooden shack on the traffic island near the town hall.

They later moved into the basement of the old school with all their luggage and found a permanent home at Steinrinnenweg 22 in 1977.

With a lot of their own effort, the volunteers expanded the building in 2014.

Another room will be added soon.

While at the beginning the work of the volunteer force was limited to extinguishing fires, today the volunteers provide technical assistance, are on site after accidents, protect parades or clear trees that have been felled by the storm from the streets.

The alarm system has also changed: church bells and trumpet sounds were followed by sirens, and in the 1990s firefighters carried modern so-called beepers in their trouser pockets.

Today, the emergency services are called via smartphone using an app that provides detailed information about the operation.

A lot has also happened with the materials used: the motorized portable fire pump trailer brought relief in 1934.

The Erlingers received their first fire fighting vehicle, the LF 8, in 1973. It was replaced several times over the years.

The volunteers have been using the MLF multi-purpose fire engine since 2021.

The ratio between members and residents has declined noticeably over the years: In 1909, 91 of 833 residents were members of the fire department, but there are currently 125 members and around 3,000 people from Erlingen - 56 of whom are active.

This is by no means a cause for concern, says chairman Florian Frey, because with technical progress the efficiency of the fire department has also increased.

And the career change campaign two years ago had a positive effect on the number of members.

The festivities are scheduled for June 21-23.

How, where and what is not yet clear.
