This is the sequence that will surely have had the greatest impact on the Tokyo Olympics: that of the German pentathlon rider in tears, hitting Saint Boy with her whip, a horse who refused to perform, then of her trainer giving a punch to the animal.
During the same games, in show jumping, Kilkenny, a young gray gelding, was spitting blood from his nostrils, but he was allowed to finish the event with his chest stained with red.
Jet Set, 14-year-old champion, had a bad fall on the cross country and was euthanized.
