Schliersee – As a Smart Tourism Region (STR), the Miesbach district would like to counteract the temporary overload of roads and parking spaces.

Traffic jams in the morning towards the lakes and mountains, in the evening in the opposite direction to the north, to the motorway and towards the state capital.

Overcrowded parking lots, blocked driveways.

Now the district would like to counteract the temporary overload as a Smart Tourism Region (STR).

The starting signal took place on Monday (February 5th).

Gmeiner: “Added value for all communities”

Guests and locals alike should benefit from visitor guidance through real-time information.

Harald Gmeiner, head of tourism in the Oberland Regional Development (REO), also promised “added value for all communities”.

And if possible, this should also apply beyond the district borders.

The STR Tegernsee Schliersee could serve as a model for all of Bavaria.

Tourism Minister Michaela Kaniber, who attended the press event on Monday in Schliersee with State Parliament President Ilse Aigner and other guests of honor, also hopes so.

“You did a sensational job,” praised Kaniber and hopes “that we will find many imitators.”

The Free State supported the project implemented by REO with 500,000 euros.

Help from artificial intelligence

The lake glittered, the sun shone from the cloudless sky, in the background the trio of peaks Aiplspitze, Jägerkamp and Brecherspitze.

In front of the almost perfect backdrop, there was no doubt that the region is a magnet for visitors - with all the positive and negative effects.

The new real-time platform of the Smart Tourism Region is now intended to help prevent traffic jams, overcrowded parking spaces and blocked streets.

It shows whether, for example, there is still space to park the car at Söllbach in Bad Wiessee, at the train station in Schliersee and at the Volksfestwiese in Miesbach.

Sensors at 40 locations, including parking lots and main traffic arteries, provide the data.

These are prepared and output using artificial intelligence.

Minister Kaniber is thrilled

In a further step, forecasts of utilization will be possible, explained Christian Greilinger, project manager at REO.

“This is a learning system, we are currently in the first class,” explained Lutz Heuser (urban institute) about data preparation.

Agriculture and Tourism Minister Michaela Kaniber was also enthusiastic.

She emphasized that alternatives to full goals are also proposed.

“There are so many wonderful places to explore,” she says.

District Administrator Olaf von Löwis is also convinced that the real-time information is suitable for guiding visitors and generally helping to “optimize mobility in our district”.

For the guests as well as for the locals.

“We want to reduce the burden on the population and increase the experience for our guests,” said Harald Gmeiner, head of tourism at the REO.

Acceptance among the population is important.

State Parliament President Ilse Aigner made it clear that tourism is “one of the leading economies” in the region.

The locals also benefit: from leisure activities, infrastructure and, indirectly, tax revenue.

The real-time information is intended to ensure that the burden decreases and that visitors are better distributed throughout the region.

In addition to road and parking lot occupancy, these also include current weather data and snow reports.

And the platform continues to learn – it just needs to be used diligently.
