According to Manfred Gilch (right), the interests of producers should take precedence over those of industry.

He said that at a BDM event in Denklingen.

The second event organized by the Association of German Dairy Farmers (BDM) had a completely different character than the first rally in January, when top Green politician Ludwig Hartmann was massively attacked: it was objective.

The focus: demands that go far beyond agricultural diesel.

A change of course in agricultural policy is required.

Denklingen

- Manfred Gilch from the BDM federal executive board showed which steps are necessary at the national and European level.

Three key points are essential, he described to 60 listeners in the Denklingen Citizens' and Clubs' Center (BVZ).

By the way: Everything from the region is also available in our regular Schongau newsletter.

And in our Weilheim-Penzberg newsletter.

There needs to be a “binding specification” of contracts with specific prices, quantities, qualities and terms, before products such as milk are picked up or delivered, emphasized Gilch.

An early warning system for agricultural markets is necessary across Europe.

Gilch spoke of a “monitoring point”.

Only in this way could crises, for example in the milk market, be made quickly and objectively visible in order to prevent over-delivery and thus a rapid drop in prices.

Management of agriculture at EU level

The third point also relates to the level of the European Union: tools and instruments must be developed for market management in agriculture.

In the future, the interests of producers must “have priority over industry,” Gilch shouted into the microphone.

All news and stories can also be found on the Schongauer Nachrichten Facebook page.

Gilch appealed to politicians to ensure equal opportunities between farmers and buyers.

What is necessary is fair competition between farmers on the marketers' side and between dairies on the buyers' side.

“If we are not strengthened, we will not get out of this misery,” he added, referring to the currently low milk prices.

Supplying the population should be the priority

The farmers' planned vigil in front of the BVZ in Denklingen was canceled due to strong winds.

Speakers at the rally, which was moderated by Hermann Dempfle (Rott) from the BDM Bavarian state team, included Gilch, Martin Schuster from Leeder from the BDM Landsberg district team, Johann Leis from Uffing as BDM state chairman and Irmgard Hurnaus from Rott for the rural agriculture working group in the Oberland.

According to AbL, the amount of support for young farmers should no longer be based on the area of the farm.

Companies with annual consumption of up to 10,000 liters should also be excluded from the planned gradual reduction in the price of agricultural diesel.

For Martin Schuster from Leeder, 35 years old, master of agriculture and spokesman for the BDM in the Landsberg district since autumn 2023, there needs to be a rethink.

The focus should no longer be on supplying industry with cheap raw materials, but rather on supplying the population with regional food produced through a circular economy.

It must be possible for farmers to generate income via the market again – “without being dependent on tax money”.

To achieve this, a change of course is necessary in European agricultural policy.
