A helicopter with six people on board crashed near a small town in Southern California's Mojave Desert, authorities said Saturday.
The helicopter went down Friday near Baker, a town of 700 people, 153 kilometers (95 miles) southwest of Las Vegas, according to KABC television.
The device departed from the Palm Springs airport around 8:45 p.m. and was headed to Boulder City, Nevada, when the crash occurred around 10:00 p.m., the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office reported.
Police station agents told the television station that
they have not been able to locate survivors and that the cause of the accident is unknown
.
Messages from The Associated Press to the police station and the Federal Aviation Administration were not immediately returned.
The National Transportation Safety Board said it was sending a team to the scene.
Less than a week ago, a Marine helicopter went down in the mountains near San Diego during a downpour.
Five marines died.
Boulder City is 26 miles (41 kilometers) southeast of Las Vegas, where the Super Bowl, the American football championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers, is played on Sunday.
