The future of the Geltinger village shop is uncertain.
The business may be on the verge of collapse.
The board of directors is calling an extraordinary cooperative meeting for next week.
Gelting – The Geltinger village shop slipped into the red last year.
Due to the persistently poor economic situation, the grocery store with a café operation is now threatened with extinction.
The board has scheduled an extraordinary general meeting for next Thursday, February 15th, in which the cooperative members will decide whether they want to keep trying or give up.
Village shop in Gelting: Poor economic situation continues
Chairwoman Silke Noeller-Granget emphasized in an interview with our newspaper that the board of directors, the supervisory board and the sales team definitely want to continue.
According to the cooperative law, one is obliged to hold a general meeting as soon as the loss is greater than half of the business balance and reserves.
The deficit is around 20,000 euros;
There are around 25,000 euros in the account, says Noeller-Granget.
For comparison: in 2022 the loss was 50 euros, in 2021 it was a black zero.
In December 2023, a traditionally good month, sales were weak, reports the chairwoman.
The same was true for the whole of last year.

In a conversation with our newspaper at the beginning of January, the chairwoman said that things were moving from month to month.
But how long do the 280 comrades want to continue this?
If the majority decides to close the village shop on Thursday, Gelting would no longer have a local supplier.
“We definitely want to prevent that,” says Noeller-Granget.

The board of directors and the sales team planned to increase staffing levels to save the business.
The current twelve employees should be deployed more flexibly.
This means that if there is nothing going on on a rainy afternoon, someone could go home earlier.
Conversely, jumpers should be available at short notice on busy days.
The village shop has tried again and again with special promotions, leaflets, calls in the press and adjustments to the range.

The success never lasted.
“It just has to somehow get into the heads of the people of Gelting that they value their store and shop there regularly,” said the chairwoman.
She would also like customers to tell the team what they are missing from the village shop.
Ideas for maintaining the store will also be asked at the meeting starting at 7 p.m. in the Catholic parish hall.
The board therefore asks for active participation.
