Reconstruction is the central issue for the community of Benediktbeuern after the severe hailstorm last year.

There are also plans for a large construction project this year, which leaves little scope for further projects.

Benediktbeuern – According to Mayor Anton Ortlieb, there are 21 municipal buildings in the monastery village.

Without exception, all of them were damaged by the storm at the end of August 2023.

They would now be gradually repaired - a process that of course began last year.

But there is still a lot of repair work to be done on the buildings this year, which fortunately were all insured, says Ortlieb.

Hail damage must be repaired on the buildings in the municipality of Benediktbeuern

It's not just roofs that need to be renovated.

Damage to the plaster or caused by water penetration must also be repaired.

In an interview with our newspaper, the mayor mentioned the repair of the school building roof, which is largely due to be carried out during the summer holidays, as an example.

Among other things, the facade of the town hall needs to be renovated.

The old pharmacy was also badly affected by the storm.

The mayor is certain that all of these measures together “will tie up our capacities.”

“We’ll see to it that we work through it.

But it inhibits the community.” Above all, the building authority’s “personnel capacities” are so stretched that there is hardly any scope left for other projects this year.

The majority of the renovation work on the municipal buildings is scheduled to take place this year.

But some things wouldn't be finished until 2025.

Ortlieb does not say what objects these are.

Two bus stops will be converted to be barrier-free

Despite this work, two bus stops in the direction of Kochel are to be converted to be barrier-free this year.

This year, the community would also like to push ahead with the planning for the new building project at the former house of the Don Bosco sisters on Bahnhofstrasse.

As reported, a new building is to be built here that will accommodate a kindergarten for nine groups.

According to an initial cost estimate, the community has to expect a “high single-digit million amount,” said Ortlieb.

He mentions a sum of around six million euros, but admits: “There is still room for improvement.”

Cleaning up the hail damage and planning the new kindergarten building: These are the two big issues for the community this year.

“It’s a year of processing and planning,” is how the mayor puts it.

And what about the village renewal project?

According to Ortlieb, at least the planning here should be completed this year.

A traffic show is also still pending.

There is also reason to celebrate in Benediktbeuern

Whether the village renewal can be carried out in a timely manner seems questionable, says Ortlieb.

Actually, the first construction phase should have been started in 2025 “at best”.

It is now clear: “This will not be sustainable.” On the one hand, because of the consequences of the hailstorm.

On the other hand, because federal funding would no longer be paid out.

“The village renewal will come,” Ortlieb is certain.

The only question is when the Free State will provide funds for this.

The community is therefore considering whether the village street could be repaired “on a small scale” before the actual village renewal because of its many damaged areas.

But there is also reason to celebrate in Benediktbeuern.

Among other things, a new maypole will be erected.

In addition, according to Ortlieb, the municipal coat of arms is 65 years old this year.

However, there will be no celebration for this occasion.

The school's 50th birthday is being celebrated.

But more details are not yet clear.
