BMW shows the first electric station wagon in all its glory: design icon, space miracle?

There are divided opinions among fans about the i5 Touring.

Size and price receive criticism.

Munich - When it comes to drive technology, the BMW 5 Series has been a kind of pioneer in over five decades of existence:

The second generation E28 was the first model from Munich that was also available with a diesel engine as standard.

In the meantime, a V10 petrol engine was installed in the BMW M5 (built between 2005 and 2010), which made the hearts of combustion engine fans beat faster.

BMW is launching the new 5 Series as an electric station wagon and with combustion engines

In 2024, the five-series BMW will come onto the market as an electric station wagon for the first time, when the i5 Touring will be available to customers from May 2024.

However, the trailers will not be forced to use electromobility:

Both the sedan and the 5 Series station wagon are still available with gasoline, diesel or hybrid drive.

BMW's maxim of technological openness should continue to bring lucrative sales figures for the successful car company, be it in its home market of Europe, the USA or Asia.

There are several versions of each of the four drive types; the new 5-series G60 remains unaffected by the impending end of combustion engines within the EU.

BMW i5 Touring: Fans rave about the design - but also express criticism

The brand's fans get their blood boiling at the sight of the electrified station wagon generation: The design impresses many after the premium manufacturer has received shitstorms in the past, for example due to the “monster kidneys”.

What is causing criticism, however, is the recently increased dimensions, the high weight of well over two tons and the ambitious pricing policy that BMW is pursuing for the i5 electric car.

The spacious Stromer has grown again compared to its predecessor: at 5.06 meters, it is around ten centimeters longer, over three centimeters wide and 1.7 centimeters high.

This not only makes finding a parking space a little more difficult in the future, but things could also start to get tight in your home garage with a BMW i5 Touring.

New BMW i5 Touring: Fans criticize megalomania and prices

In addition, it is the steep price that deters potential car buyers: in the entry-level eDrive40 version, the electric station wagon costs at least 72,200 euros in Germany - over 10,000 euros more than the cheapest diesel model (520d).

According to the price list, the car manufacturer charges 101,500 euros for the sporty BMW i5 M60 Touring with all-wheel drive.

Accordingly, there are comments in social networks and under articles where users comment on the elegant BMW innovation.

Selection:

  • “Parking space is tight, but cars are getting bigger.

    But households are getting smaller.

    What an absurd development.”

  • “I'm blown away - BMW can still build nice cars”

  • “And another unnecessary, overloaded battleship…”

  • “I liked driving a 5 Series, but it’s finally too big for me”

  • “Much nicer than the ugly, jacked-up SUV tons”

  • “70,000 euros?!

    Just too much money”

  • “It's somehow going in the wrong direction: weighing almost 2.2 tons and a footprint of almost 10 m²”

BMW is currently planning an electric car offensive based on the New Class.
