With a Whatsapp post requesting death wishes for Chancellor Scholz, among others, CDU parliamentary group vice-president Bommert caused sharp criticism.

A successor has now been chosen to chair a committee.

Potsdam - The Brandenburg CDU MP Steeven Bretz is to be his successor at the head of the economic committee in the state parliament after the scandal surrounding the WhatsApp status of CDU parliamentary group deputy leader Frank Bommert.

The group's executive board voted unanimously for Bretz to take over as chairman, said group spokeswoman Monika Larch on Monday.

The board wants to propose this to the group on Tuesday.

Bommert will remain a deputy member.

The “Potsdamer Neuesten Nachrichten” and the “Prignitzer” reported about it on Monday.

In a WhatsApp status in January, Bommert wrote that God had called to him favorite rock star Tina Turner, favorite skier Rosi Mittermaier and favorite footballer Franz Beckenbauer - and continued: “My favorite politicians are Robert Habeck, Annalena Baerbock and Ricarda Lang.

Oh and Olaf Scholz.”

In the face of criticism, Bommert stated that the publication was a mistake that he very much regretted.

He resigned from the chairmanship of the Economic Committee on the grounds that he no longer had cross-party support.

The Brandenburg CDU, of which Bommert is deputy chairman, had reprimanded him.

This does not involve removal from party positions or other penalties.

Bommert initially denied having written the post, but later admitted it.

The Green group called for further consequences.

Bretz will no longer be able to be a member of the main committee of the state parliament in the future because it sometimes meets in parallel with the economic committee.

That's why State Parliament Vice President Barbara Richstein should take over the role in the main committee, said the parliamentary group spokeswoman.
