Delinquency in Charente-Maritime: burglaries and vehicle thefts on the rise in 2023

The Charente-Maritime prefecture has just presented the report on delinquency and road safety for the year 2023. In detail, property crimes increased by 2.07% with a marked increase in burglaries (2,214 in total, +27%) and vehicle thefts (1,524 in total, +11%).

Only deliberate destruction and damage have slowed down with a decline of 7% compared to 2022.

According to law enforcement, 44 armed robberies were most often carried out by isolated people who were quickly arrested.

Attacks on physical integrity have also exploded (+ 14.40%) with 6,684 incidents recorded.

Nearly 1,900 of them concerned victims of domestic violence (+14% compared to 2022).

Around sixty serious danger telephones and 12 anti-reconciliation bracelets were activated.

The only notable improvement is linked to narcotics: 133 trafficking cases were dismantled, says the prefecture, which listed 2,117 incidents in 2023 (-6.40% compared to an increase of 2.80% nationally).

Fewer deaths on the roads

On the department's roads, 416 accidents were also recorded (-3.93%) for a total of 546 injuries and 57 deaths – eight fewer than in 2022. Nearly half of the fatal accidents involved pedestrians. , cyclists and scooter users.

Eleven bikers and scooter drivers also lost their lives.

Brice Blondel, prefect of Charente-Maritime, promised a series of actions and deeds in the coming weeks as well as an increased presence of law enforcement on the ground.

In 2023, gendarmes and police officers would have accumulated nearly 688,000 hours of patrolling throughout the country.
