Gironde: flooded, Arès hospital forced to close its emergency rooms

Highlights: The Wallerstein private hospital in the Gironde commune of Arès was not spared by the torrential rains. Its emergency, surgery and imaging departments, located on the ground floor of the buildings, were flooded. If no patients were put in danger, they had to be evacuated to the upper floors. Only one of the four freight elevators at the health establishment was able to be put back into service this Monday. If developments permit, the emergency department should reopen this evening at 7 p.m.


Plagued by floods, Saturday and Sunday, while Gironde was hit by an orange alert, a hospital in Arès was forced to evacuate its patients.

While an orange alert for risk of submersion was in progress this weekend, the Wallerstein private hospital in the Gironde commune of Arès was not spared by the torrential rains.

Its emergency, surgery and imaging departments, located on the ground floor of the buildings, were flooded on Saturday and have been closed since.

If no patients were put in danger, they had to be evacuated to the upper floors.

“We made this decision very quickly for hygiene reasons.

We were helped by the firefighters and the gendarmerie because we no longer had functional elevators,”

Only one of the four freight elevators at the health establishment was able to be put back into service this Monday.

And if, a priori, the devices used to carry out x-rays and scanners were not damaged by the high water, it remains impossible to use them for the moment.

A lack of temporary resources which led to the suspension of activity and the postponement of surgical interventions scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Site cleaning and maintenance are underway to ensure that the devices can restart safely.

In the meantime, the most urgent patients are redirected to the Mutualiste clinic in Pessac.

The SMUR still functional

Despite its setbacks, the Wallerstein private hospital in Arès maintained a functional SMUR team ready to respond to the urgent needs of patients.

In conjunction with the Gironde firefighters, a crisis unit was brought together and the white plan initiated.

In the meantime, patients are invited to contact 15 as a priority in the event of an emergency or, failing that, the hospital switchboard for planned treatment.

If developments permit, the emergency department should reopen this evening at 7 p.m.
