Several luxury yachts were on fire in an Italian tourist port over the weekend.
It could have been arson.
San Felice Circeo – The tourist port of San Felice Circeo turned into a sea of flames on Saturday evening.
Several yachts were completely engulfed in flames.
The incident is causing great concern in the holiday community in Italy.
At around 8 p.m. on Saturday evening, a fire broke out on a twenty-meter-long yacht in the tourist port of San Felice Circeo - a municipality in the province of Latina (Lazio region) almost 100 kilometers southeast of Rome.
The flames later spread to two other boats in the harbor, as reported by the Italian
Corriere
, among others .
The fire probably spread to the other boats due to the wind.
According to initial findings, there were no people on board the ships.
Major fire in Italy's tourist port: Weather hinders extinguishing work
A large number of firefighters, coast guards and carabinieri were on site and tried to put out the fire.
The stern anchorage of two boats came loose and strong winds pushed them against the harbor pier.
While the unloading continued, both ships sank and remained half-submerged in the harbor.
The bad weather conditions made the extinguishing operation considerably more difficult, as the fire department announced.
Italian tourist resort in concern after port fire
The extinguishing work was finally completed around 10:30 p.m.
The emergency services continued to work until dawn to make the affected area safe and clean.
The fire department currently has two possible hypotheses as to the cause of the fire.
On the one hand, the fire could have been caused by a short circuit.
On the other hand, it could also have been a case of arson.
This second option raises concerns in the community of 10,000.
“Fear at the tourist harbor,” is the title of the
Il Tempo
portal about the incident.
