“imperative”
measure .
“Foreigners who come to have paper babies, this will no longer be possible (...) In Mayotte, we are, with 12,000 births per year, the largest maternity ward in Europe.
90% of pregnant women are foreigners and it is clearly the law of the land that these people are targeting
,” she said this Monday morning on RTL.
More than 10,000 births in 2022
The Mayotte Hospital Center (CHM), whose headquarters is located in Mamoudzou, is made up of five maternity units.
The main one, that of Mamoudzou, represents 70% of births, according to a senatorial report published in July 2022. The
“peripheral maternity wards”
are those of Dzaoudzi, Kahani, M'Ramadoudou and Dzoumogné.
Since 2012, the number of births in maternity hospitals across the archipelago has continued to increase.
Particularly in that of the capital: in 2012, 4,387 children were born there compared to 7,735 in 2022, according to data from the Regional Health Agency (ARS) of Mayotte.
In total, the number of births in Mahorais maternity hospitals increased from 6,736 in 2012 to 10,795 in 2022. The figure of “12,000” cited by Estelle Youssoufa does not appear in any public statistics, but it is in any case close to reality .
When questioned, MP Liot did not respond to our requests.
However, in Mayotte, births outside maternity wards are
“much more frequent than elsewhere”
, according to INSEE.
In 2022, this phenomenon affected 7% of births in the department.
Many children are therefore born outside the medical radar.
These figures make the Mayotte maternity ward the first in France.
Far, even very far, ahead of the maternity wards of hospital groups or university hospitals in mainland France.
In 2014, for example, 6,680 births were recorded at the CHM compared to 5,440 at the Jeanne de Flandre hospital in Lille, or 5,254 at the Cochin hospital in Paris, according to Drees.
In 2020, more than 8,000 children were born at the CHM, compared to barely 5,500 at the Pellegrin hospital group in Bordeaux and around 4,200 at the Croix-Rousse hospital in Lyon.
No ranking at European level
However, there is no ranking on a European scale.
Nor even the European Union.

However, you only need to visit the sites of maternity hospitals in different European countries to realize how prolific the Mayotte Hospital Center is.
In Germany, the Berlin hospital which recorded the most births in 2022 was that of Saint Joseph, with 4,095 newborns.
The same year, in Bavaria, 6,146 births were recorded at the München Klinic.
In Spain, a study by the Madrid Health Service Observatory reveals that 1,075 children were born at the Infante Cristina Hospital in 2022. Nearly 2,000 were registered at the Torrejón hospital.
The record in 2022 goes to the University Hospital of La Paz, where more than 4,800 newborns were born.
In Lisbon, according to the Portuguese press agency Noticias, nearly 3,000 deliveries took place at the Alfredo da Costa maternity ward.
The figures are even lower at the Szent Imre hospital in Budapest, Hungary, where nearly 2,900 births were recorded in 2021. In Belgium, the maternity hospital at Brugmann University Hospital, the first in the country, has around 2,700 births per year.
In summary
, the French maternity hospital recording the greatest number of births per year actually depends on the Mayotte Hospital Center.
However, the figure of 12,000 births within the CHM itself does not appear anywhere, but that of 2022 for the entire CHM appears close, with more than 10,000 births.
Finally, if no classification has been officially established on a European scale, the comparisons at least make it possible to realize that the Mahoran maternity ward has a higher activity than that of large German, Belgian or Spanish hospital centers.
