Little disruption was reported Monday from an eight-hour train strike declared by grass roots unions which had been expected to hit Italian commuters hard.
The national strike of railway workers proclaimed by the Cub and Usb grassroots unions, protesting the renewal of the contract, started at 9 am.
The eight-hour stoppage, until 5pm, is affecting all companies in the sector and will impact not only Trenitalia, but also Italo and Trenord.
Freight transport workers will also walk off he job as well as those of RFI, the company in charge of managing the network and railway infrastructure.
Commuters had been expected to suffer the greatest inconvenience, while long-distance trains were not expected to be particularly disrupted.
