There are often complaints about the unpunctuality of the Munich S-Bahn.

New figures from the Federal Ministry of Transport now confirm the complaints.

Munich - Around one in ten Munich S-Bahn arrived at least six minutes late last year.

According to the Federal Ministry of Transport, only 89.5 percent of all S-Bahn trains arrived on time in 2023.

Looking at 2020, this represents a decline of almost 5 percentage points.

Poor performance of the Munich S-Bahn in comparison to Germany

This balance makes Munich look bad compared to the rest of Germany.

On a nationwide average, 92.5 percent of S-Bahn trains in the nine largest rail networks operated by Deutsche Bahn arrived on time.

A Deutsche Bahn train is also on time with an arrival time of up to 5.59 minutes after the planned time.

The S-Bahn in Berlin, Hamburg and Central Germany even achieved a punctuality rate of between 95.6 and 96.6 percent.

The Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn performed worst.

Only 85.2 percent of the trains arrived at their destination on time.

The punctuality of the Munich S-Bahn decreased in 2023.

Disrupted infrastructure and overload lead to more unpunctuality

With the exception of the Rhine-Ruhr S-Bahn, the punctuality of all trains decreased in 2023 compared to 2022.

This is mainly due to damage to the infrastructure and overloaded railway junctions, explained Green MP Matthias Gastel.

He called for “higher investments in more efficient and less failure-prone infrastructure” as a long-term solution to these problems.
